GOTY Awards mean nothing?
You hear that almost from every gamer, but gamers nowadays can't think more than they can pay attention to a story.
It means a lot to devs. It's acknowledgement for their games.

The only acknowledgement devs really care about is the sales figures.
My thought:

If non-industry people caring about an award didn't matter to those giving and receiving it, the ceremony would not be broadcast to them, and its accolades not used for advertisement.
I have never given a single :shit: what the "industry" thinks the best games are.

Furthermore, game awards are manipulated and thus fake af. They provide no value to anyone except people selling games, and I dont really care one whit about them beyond their product being judged quality by me personally or actual trusted peers.

They have to be working on someone though I guess or you wouldn't get "accolades" trailers for games.
Ngl I'm always ok with playing a goty game
It means absolutely nothing to me. If I enjoy a game, I enjoy the game. Reviews, rating, awards be damned.

Ego.
Video games have been trying to emulate the movie industry for decades

Ironic because I think the VGAs get 10x the viewership as the Oscars; the last time I paid attention to the latter was because Will Smith slapped Chris Rock.

Maybe the Oscars need to premier movie trailers....that's kind of why I watch the VGAs.

you dont get the point. It does not matter what YOU think. Obviously if u r not involved why would you care. YOu would care much more if you get involved eg.g you get an award for you work and place in your CV but then cry when all say some day no1 cares for your experience and awards.

If you expect him to care about it, then it does matter what he thinks.
Being named a GOTY only really matters to the dev and publisher. It gives them another marketing tool in which to sell more copies of that game. Maybe the fans of that game will get a warm fuzzy feeling about it, but they don't get anything more out of playing a GOTY game than they did before.

Think about it though; why would "GOTY" sell more copies if the only people who care about it already own the game?

Surely for it to be a marketing tool worth using, it has to persuade somebody new to buy the game based on "GOTY".
It's a meaningless marketing term, nothing more.

Cause people are stupid in general and don't inform themselves. They see a new label and think it's different.
