Windows 7 Won't Turn Off Screen When Steam is Running
So this is an odd issue, but hopefully I've got the right place for it.

I've noticed the past few days that my computer isn't turning the screen off after the 15 minute mark, which I've set in Power Management through the control panel. Usually, it would work for a day or two, and then stop turning the screen off. I wasn't sure what could be the problem, but it hit me that I launch a select few programs myself on login (Steam, iTunes, Speedfan, etc.). So I performed a small test.

I set the timer to 1 minute, and did some testing. iTunes, Speedfan, and other have no effect on the screen turning off. However, once Steam has been launched, it passes by the minute mark without turning the screen off.

I don't know if this is a fairly new development, since I haven't noticed it since before this week. Is there perhaps a Steam update that had a bug in it? Am I just sentenced to opening and closing Steam when I want to play a game? Is there some other solution that I'm missing?

I realize this is more of a Windows question, but it's heavily Steam related, and I hope there may be some answers!

Thanks,
-Kaizerwolf

OMG i thought i was alone, i'm having the exact issue. Been troubleshooting it for the last 2 hours and its definitely being caused by steam running. I did the exact 1 minute tests you did and the only time the monitor won't turn off is when steam was running, and its only happened in the last week at some point.

you are right, thanks for the link, switching off the store page makes it work again.

Okay! Your few comments are appreciated, and that linked video helps a lot!

This is my solution.

1. Open Command Prompt (*right click, run as Administrator if you are not already the administrator)
2. Type
powercfg -requestsoverride PROCESS steamwebhelper.exe DISPLAY
3. Idle on the store page for a minute, and watch the screen go dark!

To undo this command, simply type the same line, but without "DISPLAY" at the end. This will revert the powercfg requests back to normal.

If you don't feel like monkeying around with command prompt, I think by possibly going to Steam's settings, Interface tab, and setting the "Favorite Window" as something other than Store (I set mine to Library in conjunction with the powercfg command), that may fix it.

Thanks for all your help!

(PS. is there any way to sticky this?)

Hello,

Do you have something for CS2? I tried everything but doesn't work.

I let active CS2 in my bar and the screen on desktop, but my screen doesn't turn off after 1 minute of idle. If I close CS2 the screen turns off after 1 minute of idle, but with CS2 opened the screen stays open all the time no matter what.

I tried with your settings that you posted, it worked on CSGO, but now on CS2 is not working anymore.

Can you please help me with some updated settings for my screen to turn off after 1 minute of idle with CS2 opened?

Thanks
