You pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Is this a serious question?
Cool story bro.
Where I work the president of the company puts out messages about what they think important in an email every so often. I get letters and messages from people in charge of the things I use and subscribe to/pay for all the time talking about issues that they think important regularly.
Most are kinda stuffy and businesslike, but not all, and some are fairly informative. Steam has announcement sections, threads can be pinned and locked, it wouldn't have to be anything more than a general state of gaming, the interwebs, and new things Valve/Steam was working toward.
Would be nice.
Most people don't understand technology. They don't understand business. Gabe could talk for hours, in depth, about things that most people do not understand even the basic premise of. The signal to noise ratio is terrible on his AMAs, with most people forcing overused memes and spouting inane fantasies about what they want X game to be like. Asides from that, there are a lot of people that are simply extremely ignorant and atrociously obnoxious.
So, yeah, why doesn't Gabe come on to the forums and talk to every single Steam user? I'm sure he won't get tired of being asked "where is HL3?" a few million times, amidst the tons of "gabe is fat durr durr" jokes and various TF2 hat memes.
In a way, that's what Gaeb's AMAs are. I fully agree that Valve could do better at communicating, but I feel that if Valve were to more regularly communicate, they would likely need a full time PR team to handle it. Those letters form the CEO aren't just whipped up by the CEO and handed out. They go through PR channels and are crafted from plans derived during meetings.
As it is, Valve communicates only when they feel they need to. This can be frustrating for the end-users, but think about how frustrating it is to try and explain to a bunch of angry, cynical teenagers how basic principles of free market economies work. The largest demographic for video games is 17 - 21 year old males. And, let's be honest, a lot of people, even those in college, are still immature idiots. Your fanbase can sometimes become your worst enemy. The most impassioned players are both a boon and a curse. That's why most video game companies communicate with their userbase via these kinds of canned "roadmap" one-way communications. They can tell you what they're planning and they don't have to deal with actually having to engage in a back-and-forth with the userbase, which can easily nosedive in terrible mess. There's a reason why Overkill Software, makers of the Payday games, eventually hired a PR person instead of Bo and Ulf Andersson, the founders of the studio, continuing address the community.
There are also very good business reasons not to communicate too much. Just as fans are interested, so are competitors. If you think EA wouldn't love to know what Valve is working on for Steam, so that they could put it into Origin, you're nuts. If Valve lets leak that they're working on feature X, you better believe that competitors will take notice and begin working on something similar or trying to force out their own similar tech faster.
Edit: Don't get me wrong, it's GREAT that it's on a third party site and not where volvo has control over the things said.
and now I better add this...
