Steam Card Drops
1. After I earn a level 5 badge do I continue recieveing card drops for that game?
2. Would I earn card drops from a game if I just let it set in the main menu without actually playing the games content?

1. You can receive card drops for as long as it says you can. Click (at the top) where it says Store - Library - Community - Your Name..

Click your name.. then "Badges".. then read down the list. Does it say "No card drops remaining" for a game? then you have no card drops remaining.

If you craft a badge to level 5 (like say before owning the game, then buy it) you will get the usual card drops.. until it says "No card drops remaining".

2. Yes.. you can earn drops just by idling the game on the menu screen while you sleep or whatever.

You can also idle a game on the menu screen while you play a second game.

None of this beats a favorite of mine: getting cards on a crashed game :-)

Many games crash in a semi-controlled fashion, by catching the crash to display a little alert. The user has to click "OK" on that to actually quit the game; in a case like this, Steam will still see the game "running" (Steam doesn't care what the program is doing, i.e. it doesn't know that it's merely showing a "I have crashed, click OK" window)...
( Such crashes sometimes happen when I idle games in a virtual machine or on my workplace, as these are not really set up for playing games )

For some games, an annoying launcher window also qualifies as "the game is running".

There are also other ways that may or may not be condoned. But simply put, all that needs to be done is Steam needs to think that the game is running.
On a second note you can still get booster packs after getting all the card drops, no matter the badge level
