Im not getting a Credit Card, find another way Valve.
Very unhappy with how the UK has gone ahead with all this, but worse is paypal or my bank being unable to verify my age even if i wanted to.

Credit Cards are something a vast majority of safe-spending brits do not have and do not want to use, so i urge you Valve, find another way because this isnt it chief.

Its bad enough my account is 19 years old and my payment method (which i need to re-login to every so often) has never changed during that entire 19 years..and you dont seem to recognise this as a form of verification? Its maddening.

Most people here have a Debit Card and some use Paypal. Anything else is an extremely fringe and unacceptable demand to make upon us all.

I love Steam so will wait to see what you do...and i know this whole situation sucks and you dont deserve to be in this situation just as much as us, but we need you to do this in a way where:

1. You verify my age, ONCE and only ONCE. The account is then able to continue accessing the full unrestricted library of Steam, FOREVER.
2. YOU DO NOT KEEP OR STORE MY PERSONAL DATA THEREAFTER. After the verification, DESTROY THAT DATA.

Get the info you need, and leave the it hell alone. We dont want to see future data breaches with all our info inside, capiche?

Why do you think they opted for this method rather than biometrics (facial recog, fingerprinting etc)?

In order to jive with the U.K, they need to comply. Steam is still attempting to mitigate the amount of data you provide to them but they still need to comply in order to provide you with business.

There are no valve / steam employees or staff, server techs, steam support, or moderators in this steam related sub-forum. No one in this USER - USER only sub-forum can help you with your rant.

That's true. It's very likely Steam doesn't want to do this anymore than we do. It's really the government's fault. They're so overly concerned about "protecting the youth". Man, the youth has been a problem for ages and we've done nothing to stop it. How is restricting or requesting age verification going to fix anything? Any smart kid knows how debit cards work. It doesn't take much for them to get their hands on one since many of their parents are irresponsible anyways. If the United States can't figure out a way to ACTUALLY protect its youth, how is verifying MY age going to change anything? It only tells them MY age. I'm one person though. Verifying the age of a single person won't fix anything in the US or UK. I agree with the original poster of this thread, this is a bad way to deal with a problem that doesn't even exist. If you want kids to not see porn, teach the parents to be responsible. Don't make it our problem. Adults will be adults. It's part of being a being country. I understand that kids need protection from harm. But seriously, let's be honest here, this isn't going to cut it. If anything, it'll cause a lot of people to leave the platform

You need to contact Steam Support directly, friend. Hopefully if enough of us message them they'll add an alternative verification method.

I think that you're barking up the wrong tree. Steam is merely a corp, and as such, they'll always take the path of least resistance if faced with (local) legal issues. Meaning a path most hostile to the average customer.

You need to take up the issue with your government.

That won't work. The US government stopped listening to Americans long ago

If only they exercised their 2A correctly.

Of course they will listen to you!

Provided that you'll make a 10mil "donation" to the appropriate "foundation", of course.

It’s a silly policy anyway, verified accounts can still be used by underage ppl in the same household. Policing this is impossible…

It sounds like there could be "bumps" in the implementation from Valve's end as well. I've read that it might not be possible to use debit if you are using credit to verify age, for example, as it appeared as though Steam would only allow you to "slot" one card into your account (at a time).

Yes. Telling Valve to do something different because you refuse to, does sound legit, lol.

Being forced to create a Credit Card is unreasonable and wrong. This needs to be done a different way.

"Hello bank i would like a credit card."
-What are you going to use it for?-
"To unlock 18+ games on steam"
-And with that knowledge we shall no longer process your payments-

See the issue here? It is out of the question!

"Hello Valve, here's my personal banking information. I have no interest in having that extra layer of data protection offered by using credit cards "

As I said, they will take the path of least resistance. The credit card "verification" is the easiest way (meaning, it's the least expensive option for them). Therefore, they won't improve this, unless faced with significant backlash (meaning, bad PR & revenue loss).
