How Steam Evolved from a Simple Update Tool to the Largest Digital Game Store
In the early 2000s, Valve created Steam as an internal platform for automatically updating their games to simplify patch distribution and combat piracy. However, in 2005, Steam transformed into a full-fledged digital store, opening access not only to Valve’s games but also to other developers’ titles. This was revolutionary: games became instantly available without physical media, changing the sales and distribution model.

Steam helped the indie scene grow, simplified updates, and improved convenience for players. However, the platform also faced criticism for market monopoly and the large volume of games of varying quality. Despite competitors, Steam remains the largest and most influential digital game store, continuing to shape the gaming industry.

Sadly to say I wasn't. I was still in my PS1/PS2/Gamecube days at the time.

I did buy the Half-Life game for the PS2 and the Orange Box for the PS3, though.

They really ought to be proud of what they made here. I am in constant awe as to how many games they have brought onto the platform.

Not going to say everything is perfect. There is always a way to better the platform, but being the best always comes with a price.
