I'm really confused about one of the guidelines for Steam Discussions - regarding "bumping"
Okay, in the guidelines, it states

Examples of off-topic content include:
...
Bumping threads

Where exactly is the line drawn here?

My guess is this:

If one user is posting multiple messages in a row to a thread, without anyone else responding, that is considered "bumping threads".

But if a user is responding to other messages that other people are posting (and assuming the content is on-topic for the thread and forum), it's not considered "bumping threads".

Is that accurate, or am I way off?

Example of a useless bump.

Does this section have guidelines? Where did you find those?

Regarding bumping threads, that's when you post purely for the purpose of pushing a thread to the top of the visibility, despite not posting any useful content that adds to the discussion.

It can be a problem if the topic just needs to die and the group was sensible enough to let it die, but then someone looking to create drama bumps it.

That's what I assumed, but I had a user accusing me of bumping a thread I created, but I was just responding to people's messages, so I was confused. Maybe they were confused, who knows

That is a correct assessment...

IE if you just bump a thread to attract attention it should be frown upon but if you have a meaningfull conversation you should be allowed to answer back... that Is not bumping...

Unless I am to dumb and you have something other in mind???

Edit: The above linked example is also considered bumping... it doesn't contritube anything other tthan to get attention

IE don't be an atttention ♥♥♥♥♥ (a censored word for someone doing stuff for money)

Bumping for visibility is spam.

Makes sense! Thanks
One thing to consider in addition. if you are replying to multiple people "try" to keep it into one post.

some moderators will consider it bumping or spam if you chain a bunch of posts in a row getting caught up.

Always better to be safe by formatting it into one post

That's totally reasonable. I'd imagine if the individual responses were relatively close in time, it might not be taken as bumping. But if a user would respond to one person, then 10 hours later, respond to someone else, then 10 hours later, respond to someone else (with no other user messages in between), it could very clearly be deemed as bumping.
heh you are assuming the moderators will take the time to actually take the timestamps into context. Valve outsourced their moderation and they run on "completing" reports program... So they don't always put in the due diligence that might be required. So while you are quite reasonable, it doesnt always work sensibly.

Technically, every single post is bump. So they can ban anyone at anytime. Depends on the moderators mood.

That is quite a negative way of looking at things.

Bumping is, I think, under the common sense category. You know when you are bumping for attention and when you are having reasonable discourse.

Thats the problem, D.Flame is never having reasonable discourse. Thats why all they do is complain

Bumps in the sense that new posts gets added yes... but that's not what the OP is refering to... :-)

He's refering to the act of attracting attention without contributing anything worthwhile

The rules don't specify, and the mods can abuse that.

You're new to the Internet huh?

Ever since I first used the Internet waaaaaay back in the late 1990's bumping had ALWAYS been meant to attract attention without contributing something worthwhile... IE getting your thread up on the first page and on top... and I assume that is still the case (atleast I hope it is)
