Some games use it to jump.
Mass Effect uses it bring up the hud for commands.
Other games use shift to run and use the avoid mechanic.
All keys are for typing.
Usually you can rebind keys, so just rebind them the way you like, OP.
The modifier keys (shift, control, alt) are specifically meant to be used alongside other keys, so the keyboard is internally wired to be able to reliably detect them as part of a multi-key-press; this is NOT necessarily the case with other keys.
Space bar is the best universal button there is across your keyboard period.
Developers are sleeping on this, and steam users don't know better to the detriment of gamers across the universe.
I still prefer it to be a one function key for important functions like Jump. But as said, you're free to revind things yourself. No need to push it on others.
