People who received games as a gift no longer count towards the review score
What is this BS?
So my review doesn't count now because it was a gift? What is up with that?
I am still the one experiencing the game even if someone else paid for it.

Yeah thats a bit weird. I can understand why they dont count key activations since Steam did not see any money for those but with a Steam Gift someone bought the game on Steam so the review should also count for the score.
Wait this was as far back as 2017? Why am i just now seeing this. damn
The only thing they did recently is change the icons.

That should be obvious as to why your review is invalid.

Go down the rabbit hole of buying good reviews. I give you a free game in exchange for a good review. MY POS garbage game can go on and still make money

You can still give someone money to buy your game and have the review count though so yea that can still happen if you want to bring that up.

what's easier for steam to control? steam gifts or money that doesn't go through steam?
Yea fair enough, though it still is entirely possible to manipulate review scores with or without steam gifts not counting. Bot accounts for example as a "service" (yes these exist)

A restaurant has a comment box located inside of the restaurant, patrons dinning in the restaurant can write a comment, place it in the box. Other patrons at the restaurant can read the comments if they wish. Now, a patron at the restaurant has a meal and also orders the same meal to-go, leave a comment in the box. They take that to-go order to a friend and the friend enjoyed it. Unfortunately for the friend however they cannot leave a comment because they weren't a patron dinning at the restaurant, simply someone that received a meal from there via a patron. This works the exact same way on steam, steam is the restaurant, reviews are the comment box, the game gifted to you was the to-go meal that you enjoyed and at the end of the day is what was important. If you are that inclined to voice your opinion if you feel the way doing so on here is being done there are plenty of other outlets to do so.

People can still read my review, it just doesn't count to the overall score. So in your example it's like if the restaurant turned around and said "disregard that comment to our overall rating, but you can still read it, we just won't take it into consideration" which imo is very weird and makes it sound like the restaurant has a problem with that particular review.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
