Counter question: What over $50 is actually good? Why do you assume price == quality? Most over $40 look meh to me. The best value for money has got to be in the ~$15-30 range IMO.
Why do you assume price == lack of quality? The whole "all AAA games automatically suck" thing is really overblown.
Overpriced, underdeveloped, ideologically possessed, objectively lower quality than its predecessors (because there's almost nothing new and original from the AAA space anymore), etc.
As for a game recommendation, well... Some of my favorites are:
- Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
- Grim Dawn
- TES4: Oblivion (but get a mod for the broken leveling system)
- (Original) Mass Effect Trilogy on highest difficulty
- Nier: Automata
- various private server games out there, especially for games that no longer live
