Review More Than 4000 Characters Too Long?
I just wrote my first review for Millennia. When I wanted to save it it stated that my review was more than 4000 characters too long? What?!?! There are quite sophisticated games out there for which thorough reviews could need literally ten thousands of characters. And if you really want to stick to such a low maximum length for reviews the editing window should indicate that by showing something like '2,366 of maximum 5,000 characters used' (or whatever number is the maximum).

I'm not going to shorten my review (luckily, I had put it and saved into a local text file). I thought maybe I could abuse different languages to publish my review in two parts, but though this option is mentioned on the page explaining the reviews feature I couldn't choose a language for my review at all (and thus I can't even publish my review in different languages).

Is any of this going to be corrected?

Are you writing a book, or a review?

Anyways if want people to enjoy good review, don't drag things on, can keep things simple as don't need in-depth explaining things, or spoil things, don't need to repeat things, don't have to share personal history, or story in the review, don't have to put fancy ASCII, or whatever art into it.

Review basically just opinion about the game, and if you recommend it to someone, or not that about it mainly, adding anything else is extra.

Just opinion about the game? That is no review at all, not in my universe. Of course, there are games that are small and don't need long reviews but 4X games like Millennia are complex and sophisticated. Going into details for such games is not spoilering since tactics and strategy (which are the factors you usually want to play those games for) come from clever use of the different elements, not from discussing the elements just by themselves. For such games the maximum number of characters is by far too low.

its just a short review for the game you are meant to be doing. the review is too long not the limit is too low.

If this should be so then as I said the editor should indicate the maximum number beforehand instead of letting people run into this. That would be an easy to implement improvement Steam could provide.

And this low character maximum means that I'm probably never going to write again a review on Steam for most of the games I play since these games deserve much more thorough reviews than the shallow stuff that make up 99% of all reviews. That's how I feel about this. Of course it could be that 99% of the people may feel different about this which may be the reason for this low maximum... *deep sigh*

i agree with that, it should have a character count for you so you know when to stop.

What i've done for those if my thoughts prattle on for too long, i just post any excess into the comments.

Only one of my character limit breaking reviews has run into the sort of issue of other people commenting breaking the flow of the add-ons.
there is a bug if you post too long revies. The max character limit is 8000k. Post a small review, then edit the review and paste the long text in.

Personally I think the character rlimit should be lowered. Such long reviews rarely are to the point and contain way too much unnecessary fluff. I prefer short reviews, 1 maybe 2 paragraphs. If I want to read a novella, I'll buyt one. When I want to read reviews, I want to read a bunch in a shorter time.

Language choice won't remove the limit that you can only write one review per game owned.
Steam cant afford comments 8000 characters long? Are they on mysql?

Yes but if you use Chinese or Japanese characters you can express more
If you want to write a "sophisticated" novel explaining every single thing about the game- post a Guide. Reviews are supposed to tell people what you liked or didn't like about a game, why you would recommend it or not recommend it. I tend to write longer than average reviews at times too, but I have never had the system tell me "TL;DR, bro." and make me cut 4000 characters out.

Publish a Guide for the game if you want to go into every single tiny detail of the game, and write a short ,concise review of the game and put a link to your Guide in the review so people who want to read a novel about the game before they buy it can do so.
With guide i cannot affect the game score . Plus i doubt people read guides to get info about game

I wrote a guide for the puzzler Dorfromantik several months ago, and I'm sure this guide isn't for every player of this game. And it is quite long. Despite that it has already more than 1,400 views and has been bookmarked more than 50 times, so yes, people are interested in guides.

But you probably mean that people wouldn't read a guide to get information they would expect from a review. That's probably true.

On the page that explains the steam reviews there is shown that you can choose a language. This element is missing in the current version of the review editor. Though it would still make sense even if you are able to write only one review per game (for filtering purposes). And it would also make sense if you could write reviews in different languages. It is possible to do so with guides.
