Tell me what's unnecessary about 8.1?
I can perfectly do my work, manage my documents, watch movies, etc. except opening Steam now.
If you want to remain secure (and this means, keep your steam account secure), you won't be able to stay on windows 7 and 8 for very long. Most games will only work on windows 10 and 11. And then later, it will be windows 11 and newer.

Which you are free to do. The threat of leaving is pointless.... Valve wouldn't even notice if you did.
They also warned you, for a year, that the OS was no longer going to be supported. What did you think would happen? No support means if something breaks, they won't fix it. Well, it seems, for you, something broke. And now it's not going to be fixed.
