Steam stopped working in Windows 8.1

Now Steam is forcing me to replace my perfectly working Windows 8.1 with a totally unnecessary Windows 10 just to play a game that runs perfectly in Windows 98.

Unfortunately you are wrong, again: UpdatePack7 does not increase or improve anything to do with security in Windows 7 beyond the last Microsoft update for Windows 7 in Jan 2024. UpdatePack7 does not update anything in Windows 7 past that last microsoft-released update.

I'm sure you know this. You knew what you wrote wasn't true when you clicked the send button. But you sent the message anyway.

None of this matters when the choice is between bloated spyware with NSA backdoor or decrepit OS. The new coat of paint just makes it look less like ♥♥♥♥ but it's still ♥♥♥♥ nonetheless.

And ignores the data protection features that both Windows 10 and 11 have which if used properly keep your "naughty" files well out of the reach of the NSA.

Dunno if this Ahmad guy is still active around here or not, but nobody is forcing you to abandon your favorite OS. I have some people in my friendlist who are still running their steam client on Win7 without any issues whatsoever. Just suppress all auto-update functions and you'll be fine.

However, you need to be rational when considering future purchases: if you're looking to run Diablo 4 or Assassin's Creed Valhalla on an old OS then don't be surprised if nothing happens after the installation process - provided you get it started in the first place. Read the games' system requirements thoroughly and make sure your computer can run them. Stay away from new releases, focus on older titles and you'll be fine.
