Steam stopped working in Windows 8.1
Now Steam is forcing me to replace my perfectly working Windows 8.1 with a totally unnecessary Windows 10 just to play a game that runs perfectly in Windows 98.

All of those things you described can be turned off and/or disabled permanently in windows 10 and 11.
Please get the facts correctly before praying to win 10/11.
Temporary!=Permanently

Windows 10 will tell you the date that updates will start again. To turn them back on manually before then, click Resume updates.

I've already explained it in this thread: Either using registry within windows or using a 3rd party app to do the registry editing for us to achieve the same thing there are 2 ways to do it. Updates can be completely and Permanently disabled within both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Exactly as I said. Anyone who says Automatic Updates in Win10/11 can't be disabled just don't know how to do it.

Where do all there Win10 and and win 11 lovers came from?
You mean 97% of Steam users?
And let's not forget 96% of the world's Window users.

If people want to continue to use the horse and buggy to get around in, they can knock themselves out all they want. But the rest of the world is under no obligation whatsoever to humor them, nor cater to their wants. Enjoy your horse and buggy people, and those self-imposed limitations that come with it.

What limitations do you speak of?

Windows 7 just runs fine and has no limitations. Its also safe for me because I dont need a Nanny for my safety. I am a grown up person perfectly able to take care of myself.

Linux Mint with Steam installed for the future:

SteamOS for Steam devices which is Linux-based. I would even use SteamOS if it gets to a point where Linux Mint is today and Valve guarantees to not sniff out my data like Microsoft does.

As if Steam were working in Windows 98 to begin with even when it was new.

Maybe it's time for me to leave Steam. Maybe Steam doesn't deserve my money anymore. Bye guys.

To be honest with ya, Gaming as a whole never deserved any money from the very beginning as well.

10 years of W7 and 0 bugs. You?
Limitations? Lol what? win 10/11 lovers are being limited by MS as how you can control your OS.
Noone has provied any good argument for win 10 apart from New and Shiny. Ok and?

Well, if you get Pro version, as people should, just adjust it in group policy.

How I've disabled everything in all windows versions since Vista.
Ah yes - lets charge more for good features and tools to turn off crap
Enter Linux - disable useless BS in basic disto version

Mainly Steam has done so because various frameworks they depend on like CEF cannot be updated without breaking compatibility with older Windows versions.
So keep old outdated client for w7 and stop demanding update - how hard is that?

I don't see any demanding. All I'm seeing is the usual trolling from microsoft parrots.

As if any current iteration of windows is more 'secure' considering all the people that post with 'phished' accounts via their own stupidity, or a virus/trojan/rootkit.

Not sure I want to click ANY link any more.. or even use Email, or any chat client at this point... ESPECIALLY in windows. There are just way too many ways for exploit artists to screw with windows, and it seems that windows allows most of it. I mean Kernel level anti-cheat... lol. right. Windows happily lets the 'big boys' install said 'rootkit'.

How about the Sony Rootkit back in the day... the one that disabled the cd-writer via a rootkit they installed using a hybrid music CD. I thought mine was broken because of it. Windows just let it happen.

It hasn't changed.. but you know .. 'hur dur, security'.

I remember when I had windows 7 .. man I loved it. I bought Oculus, tried to install.. said it required windows 10.

OMG the crap I went through to get my computer updated so windows would have current drivers, as my hardware did not have many that functioned correctly in windows 10, I.E. Soundblaster Audigy Platinum. Check out 'Danel K and Soundblaster' if you have not already.

I went through all of that.. got the Oculus working, then they stated 'We are sorry, you can now install it in windows 7" OMG.

Yea.. screw Microsoft with a nut driver and any big boy that decides to push people along via driver / software via the windows 'ecosystem', and 'hur dur security', in my opinion.

I ended up moving on to Linux, and I couldn't be happier. In my opinion, the crap that Microsoft is pushing Via windows, and the fact that it looks and feels like a damned storefront/cloud service, it seems that they are 'grasping at straws' lately; finding any way to keep windows users stuck in windows. Not a good sign.

It's difficult because if they were to do that then the developers would have to maintain and update both versions of the client to make sure it stays working: Old version for Windows 7 users and a different version for "Everyone else" that uses "modern" windows. This would be twice the work for the developers all for a very small, niche group of people. It's far less effort and work involved to just drop support for older versions of windows (where < 10% of users are) and instead focus on only the version where 90% of users are.

Pro has aways been the more feature filled and manageable version. Home is for those who just want to turn on their computer and get on the web.

Lack of Unicode support in the kernel really held that version back.

Good consumer approach MS- bought cheapest version? Endure our useful features.
