Steam stopped working in Windows 8.1
Now Steam is forcing me to replace my perfectly working Windows 8.1 with a totally unnecessary Windows 10 just to play a game that runs perfectly in Windows 98.

False, you absolutely can block Microsoft from "spying on you" in Windows10/11, it requires you setting up your firewall properly.

You can also disable Windows getting Updates through Registry hacks but then you're left with manually installing the Updates. I don't recommend it because Security Updates are important to keep up to date on.

By the way Windows 7,8,8.1,10,11 are all based on the Vista kernel. And they all have some form of Telemetry data collection, I know Windows 8.1 for sure does because there is a file called Microsoft-Windows-Application-Experience%4Program-Telemetry.evtx that gets uploaded to MS every now and then, also there is provided a way to disable it from Windows settings. Windows 10 and 11 changed this and even now state it up front they collect that Telemetry data. You can disable most of it but there is still some data they have to collect to help with security updates.

Also staying on an Old OS means you can't update your software as a lot of those Apps you rely on eventually drop support for your OS. Even your Antivirus (which isn't going to protect you from a man-in-the-middle attack anyways). And likely that old software, if it connects to the internet at all, probably has security vulnerabilities as well. So you're double-dipping on the security risk by staying on an Old OS.

It's also not a good idea to connect to the internet on an old OS. No matter how careful or how safe you think you are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBDGCDtIWoU
hello

funny video but also full ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like the same video made by another yshiter and i do not need to click it to know it's complete bs because i allready made the test myself during last year and instead of watching this kind of ♥♥♥♥, do the test yourself and stop propaging misinformation like that, especially when you can do it yourself :
run virtual box,
install xp sp1
wait infection/hack when setup is done

result
- nothing during a full day ...
You do realize, that your VM is behind all your protections from the main OS, right?

Now try doing it not on a VM.

Insulting aside, that just proves what I said.

Oh, and to add, you never once said bridging, never once mentioned disabling the VM's own protections etc.

You just fired a VM up and tested and told others to test that way. So I doubt what you say greatly at this point.

I really wonder about some of you, particularly those who constantly complain and worry about "telemetry" and "spying" on the part of a legitimate company. You guys got some weirdo files you're concerned someone might see and report or something?

Just sayin, normal folks doing normal things on their computers don't worry about nonsense like that nor do they use it as a pretext for not upgrading to more recent & currently supported operating systems.

Whatever I am doing its not your concern. And its certainly not Microsofts concern either.

In addition you dont know what data Microsoft is collecting. You just assuming and believe in a benevolent Microsoft. I dont.

You may think its not important what you are doing but when you run a business and have to guard business secrets then you may not see things so easy. Even if they are not secrets but just only normal business data you should not share this data with anyone because it could be used to harm your business.

This may look overreaching to you but lets say you play some stupid gotcha game and later you wanna go into politics then this data that you played that certain game can be used to ridicule you and make sure you never get elected. This is just for games. Think about what other things you consume on the internet. What could happen to you if that kind of information becomes public. What will your family, your friends or your collegues think of you?

And Microsoft knows it all until you make sure they dont.

Total nonsense posted, way to go... :)

NO, Microsoft does not care about your super-duper new unique business idea.

No, they will not steal your ideas or sell them to third-parties, what a ludicrous idea!?
You clearly have no idea what you are discussing here.

Why would you be allowing access to people who you don't trust to your computer in any case? Also if you think that the phone doesn't have your credit card info on it somewhere if you've saved it on it that's just not true. It has to pull the data from somewhere.
Sure, it might have an encrypted token, but that is not the same as an unencrypted photo.
You keep complaining about a feature when you had to (and still have to even after fixes) agree to an EULA stipulating that you are using pre-release, incomplete software.

Lol ok buddy.

I didn't say it was my concern. It's definitely really questionable and suspicious (and kind of annoying) though how some folks choose to act about it.

Again, normal people doing normal things on their computers have absolutely nothing to worry about insofar as nefarious acts being committed against them by Microsoft.

I have no worries about what "data" Microsoft may or may not be collecting. When I'm on my computer, I'm usually working, and I don't do weird things or look at weird things or download weird things for that to be a real worry for me.

The scenario you describe, where Microsoft apparently uses your data from some random game/your internet history against you to ruin your family and political career is not only ridiculously paranoid but pretty delusional.

Microsoft does not care about your "business secrets" or your "business data." None of your excuses or reasons are valid.

Contrary to the belief of a handful of goofballs, Microsoft is not out to get you. They want to sell you their products and keep you coming back, just like any other company that makes and sells stuff.

You are basically saying the equivalent of:

"You shouldn't be upset about the guy staring through your bathroom window, watching and recording you as you shower and poop. If you are not doing anything that you should not be doing, then you have nothing to worry about."

If you want to equate Microsoft with someone watching & recording you while you use the restroom that's your own issue.

Then migrate to Linux or build your own OS if you really want to make sure no one can get their hands on your data or add telemetry or AI or whatever else you don't like about current Windows.

At the end of the day it's their product and they can do whatever they want with it, even if it means adding a widely despised AI tool.

Why do you think a company wouldnt do nefarious things?

Microsoft bribed hungarian officials and paid 8.7 Mio in criminal fines for the corruption and later paid another 16.6 Mio to settle the whole thing. They did something similar in Romania. Microsoft Bing even censored the Tiananmen Massacre in China for a while until protests started.

Look into this wikipedia article. It sums up a lot:

I dont know why you would think corporations are benevolent in nature.

There are many examples for companies doing really evil stuff:

United Fruit Company hired killers and killed people in South America. After it was in the media they rebranded and they still exist today.

Philip Morris, Reynolds and other tobacco companies hindered cancer science and conviced the publich for generations tobacco and smoking is not a problem for health. So millions of people and even children believed it, smoked and died earlier. Not to mention all the health issues involved.

Volkswagen deceived the public for years about the real emissions of the cars. The real emissions were much higher and the particles coming out of these cars are real health threats. You probably inhaled some of it on the streets.

These are just 3 short examples on how companies do evil stuff.

So for me the conclusion is I dont trust corporations just out of the blue.
Why the hell is anybody using windows 8.1?

Windows xp? Hell yea Brother!!!!
