"Real World Politics"
My 2 cents. I see on a growing number of boards, some devs and mods are now forbidding the discussion of "real world politics". Yet the very games these devs are representing and developing are in many cases promoting these "Real world politics" and narratives in their games. In many cases banning, silencing and deleting posts of anyone that attempts to discuss said issues. I don't know about anyone else, but I find this trend to be alarmingly hypocritical oppressive behaviour. This is not the steam I remember. I know I don't make the rules but regardless.

Hyperbolic headlines give more clicks.

You victim-blamed a game being censored and then claimed that wasn't censorship. you blatently tried to absolve valve of all agency. What you described is an r-rated drama, something that gets put in name across movie theatres across the world with just an R-rating and a light warning, should on steam instead get a hard lock so no one can even see the game -exists- even when looking for hard drama games with a similar M rating. Because apparently a softcore ♥♥♥ scene without several hours of content is justified to pornography. I don't know about the ♥♥♥ scenes in baldur's sky but you didn't describe unfiltered ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥ content, you described, and I quote: "depicts scenes with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ intercourse."

This is why tags are important, because when I interrupt your lecture by holding up a man, it's funny. When me doing that is the only thing preventing a game being listed on the storefront and instead put next to Evenicle, it has a bit more impanct.

Hardcore, softcore, doesn't matter. It's not me who's making the rules. In both the American and Japanese market, the BIGGEST video game markets, depictions of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ are considered pornography. That's not the case in European countries, where if you hide the genitalia with strategic angles, it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ content. But in Japan, explicit ♥♥♥♥♥♥ content is an immediate red light for a console release and in the US it's the AO rating. That's just how it is.

And while I would prefer the European approach, nobody from the game industry ever bothered to ask me.
So want he list of hollywood movies that are now ♥♥♥♥ because they have a half faded cut of the lovers having ♥♥♥ without showing the actual bits or because of some ♥♥♥ jokes that mimic ♥♥♥♥♥♥ moments between characters? Please tell me you grasp that EVENTCLE and SUBVERSE are not the same as a romantic and 30 second still and veiled image of an intimate ♥♥♥ sequence at the end of half a dozen hours of gameplay. Please, tell me you understand that those two are not the same. That kind of false dichotemy is unfair and it's why this is such a damn issue.

OK, I could not be entirely right. Mass Effect I know for sure has ♥♥♥ scenes, but the bits are hidden. It's rated M. I think the Witcher 3 is the same, it has an M-rating too. So for the AO rating, the specific condition would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ with the genitalia not obscured.
Frankly, I do not understand why there is an increase in prudish behavior, since I live in the backwater areas of the European continent, where people in charge don't give a wooden nickel about video game ratings. It's not an observation spot with an ideal view. Please understand that if corrected, I will ADMIT to being wrong.
As for the censorship targeting anime games: Anime still hasn't lost its stigma, and the stance of certain rather vocal groups of prudish people is NOT helping.

Like I said, I am just an observer. If you or anyone else wants to share some bits and bobs not in my point of view, please do.

I'm not fussed by ♥♥♥ and sexuality but it's obvious why there are limits to what is acceptable in mainstream games.

And even those reasons and "limits" change over time to the accepted norms as we learn more about sexuality/psychology.

I've lived in very religious right wing countries and their extreme censorship of ♥♥♥/nudity probably did more harm than good but i can understand why we don't want or need some violently ♥♥♥♥♥♥ or extreme misogynistic games in the general marketplace.

I respect being able to admit that, good on you man, you've won a lot more respect from for it. that really isn't easy to do. If it helps, I know for a fact that while I can crack the Diogenes joke, it's not like we can just not categorize these things. I don't know what's in baldyrs sky, but I doubt it's Evenicle. There is a reason studying this exact problem is a full time job.

Baldr Sky has explicit scenes with mosaics. Or at least has them in the Japanese version, the localized version had them removed but there's a community patch to put 'em back in. Project Sekai is the publisher, they're notorious for cutting content.
Baldr Sky however has incredibly good gameplay bits. The mech battles are what hooked me in. And the adult scenes are (except two) actually rather sweet and wholesome, so cutting them out was... purely a matter of ratings due to what's on screen. It's a proof of concept though: the main hook will always be the gameplay. Although it is important that we like what we see too. Mainstream games, especially the ones in the west, are indeed subjected to design being a little too realistic. We've grown so used to video game characters looking as ♥♥♥♥ as lingerie/underwear models that many of us don't like anything lower than that standard. The reason why that doesn't faze ME in particular is simple: realism in games is not interesting to me. I like artistic expression shown in stylized character designs. Examples: Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Dragon's Crown (I am still hoping for a PC port one day), Street Fighter III (that specific one, I am appalled by the designs in 4 and after)... But for people who DO like realistic designs... they don't seem particularly happy right now.

Ultimately, most of my posts are carrying the same message: try to locate things you LIKE. Market research focuses on things people like. And they don't necessarily have to be new and trending. EA was mortified to learn that 20 year old Command & Conquer titles outsold their releases fresh from the assembly line. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/command-conquer-invades-european-march-charts-as-sales-improve-european-monthly-charts
What they'll get out of that lesson? Time will tell. But the sales of C&C Remaster spoke loud enough for them to release C&C ultimate collection on Steam.

So, to everyone reading: support what you LIKE. Even a small victory is a victory.

We're locking this thread as it has devolved into non-productive argument. Thanks for your understanding.
