Slow Download Speeds on Steam
Hi. I'm trying to download a game from Steam and my download speed is fine for about the first few seconds, then tanks. Restarting Steam resets it back to its full download speed, again, for about the first few seconds, then it tanks again.

I have tried doing various things that different reddit posts and steam forum posts have suggested and nothing seems to be working. I should also mention that it only seems to be on my desktop, as my wife's desktop seems to get the full download speeds whenever she downloads a game.

An internet speed test tells me that I get around ~600 mbs, but when I set Steam to show me my download speeds in mbs, it's only showing around ~50-80 mbs.

I've reset my router and computer several times, cleared my download cache, flushed my network, cleared and renewed my IP, tried different download regions, set a limit speed (one that should be above my internet test speeds); I'm not using any special firewalls, I'm not using a VPN, and my ISP isn't throttling anything.

I just don't get what's going on...

Here's a picture of my download speeds on Steam: https://imgur.com/a/YGai8B4

Follow the steps Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Download Region. You can test by making a few other changes to your current server.

could it be your storage ? looks like your disk usage tanks with the download speeds

i did not really check it, but it looks as if your memory is filled and the HDD cant save the data "in time"

Like I said, I've already tried a bunch of different regions.

I'm not really sure why that is.

What do you mean by that?

I think there is a problem with router you can't find because all steam servers are OK.

I can't imagine it'd be my router, because my wife's computer is connected to the same network--both of us via ethernet--and doesn't have this problem.

Probably a problem with your computer's drive or antivirus program blocking the connection. If your answer is no for these too, that means its a problem with Steam you should report.

It's definitely not an antivirus program. I have no idea about the drive. I've read that drives get slower the more full they are, but this drive is only at half capacity and it's not that old of a drive, either. It could be the drive, but I have no idea how to go about remedying the problem if that's the case outside of maybe getting a new drive or something.

You're welcome, if that guide works you can select the message as answer so others would get help from there too.

Steam is very slow for me too. Off of gamepass I'm usually getting 140 mbps on steam I usually cap out around 25.
