That being said. Isn't (or wtf wasn't) H1Z1 (for example) started by Sony Online Entertainment?
Theres good and bad indies, same with AAA.
Don't buy into Early Access (or only for a very, VERY, few deserving cases, i.e. prison architect).
Yes, pretending to be different and/or independent is the new 'thing'. Even if they fail to live up to one or both of those.
If you don't like it, don't partake in it.
You can't beat the masses, you can deny them the attention they crave.
You see cookie cutter indie games, i see cookie cutter AAA titles.
Success is like a flame to a moth. If zombie survival games seem to be successful, people will try to get a slice of the cake... So they will if they see a modern shooter FPS is successful.
Checks library, I'm not people, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Perhaps the point of the OP was that indie titles shouldn't do what AAA devs have been doing for years.. however .. just like the OP.. I see the same thing happening.
Thus they will follow themes or genres that are popular
That is no different than its always been
Exactly.. the general vibe with indies.. was so they were not told by big publishers what to make.. so unique games could come.
A great deal of the blame for "cookie cutter" games over the years has been because big publishers who usually could care less about a computer or game.. only money... called the shots..
Indies were supposed to get rid of all that "control" and allow indies to do what they like. Too bad they chose, for the most part, to follow in the greed .. errr.. footsteps of other indies.. and even the AAA they tried so hard to get away from.
Yet there are many, many good truly different indie games on steam. Early Access is a different story.
Wanna buy into the bi-weekly zombie survival hype, ANYONE?
No, it's half life 1 with texture mods.
Honestly though, those animations look horrid.
Skimming through the vid, you have never played HL1.
On another hand. I don't care.
Exactly this. It wouldn't be so bad though if not for the hoardes of people who sit around circlejerking over their indie titles puffing them up to be these great pieces of art when in fact most of them are the same copy+pasted crap. I mean, at least 90% of CoD fans don't sit there and act all pretentious about it.
I'm not so annoyed at the fact that people want to cash in. It's the fake artistic angle that bothers me. The "We're so indie and unique and oh sure this game happens to look like every other indie game but like you don't get it man!" crap.
