Steam affecting my Internet - No Mans Sky

I have never experienced this before, until yesterday, when I contacted my ISP to ask what was wrong with my connection as it dropped to as low as 3mbps download speed.
It only occurred for around 15mins and my ISP was unable to diagnose any issues with their network, it was whilst I was downloading the new upgrade to No Mans Sky. It effected my wifi as well as this hard-wired to the Router PC.
Full speeds returned as soon as the download had completed.. I thought it coincidence.
No Mans Sky required an update today (haha), so I checked speed before updating - normal and as soon as I started the download, low and behold, my internet download speed on the PC and Firestick dropped to almost zero (ok was around 14mbs, still 1/10th).

So what the hell is happening with this.. it doesn't happen when updating other games and tbh, my family are not happy with this arrangement, to say the least!

When we had only 250Mb/s (up/down) Steam was MAXING my connection...

Now when I have 1000Mb/s it no longer happens...

The solution?

Simply go into the settings and cap tthe download speed of Steam... :-)

same thing was happen to me when downloading no man sky update it drop download limit to 1.1 mb/s . Even my disk usage is weird 1.1 mb/s.

I changed countrys for fast download but still 1.1 mb/s.

Imagine that. Popular updated being downloaded by everyone is throttled to ensure bandwidth for other users. If you don't want such a low speed, then wait a few hours after the patch drops to download it.

So first, it is not NMS that was throttled by too many people all downloading at the same time... it is my PC that was throttling the internet for the rest of my household whilst it was downloading, here in the UK.

I have looked in settings and set a limit on download speed. I will have to wait for the next NMS update/patch to see if this has any effect. As I said, it doesn't effect ANY other games I update/Patch.

not really when u don't have a really good speed it sucks all ur download speed away, when i was on 70 mb download limit from my isp i had to throttle to 5mb just so i could watch youtube and not get moaned at by others in my house, now i have fiber i don't need to throttle it so yes in a way it does suck all ur speed^^

How is it misinformation? I've a gigabit connection, Steams servers have always maxed it unless limit it through Steam or other methods.

And I can show a screenshot where it does, this proves nothing other than you've bad routing, limited it in some form, or just bad setup.

Of you think it doesn't, run the speed test while downloading from Steam once you find out why you're downloading so slow.

I'm at work, so can't download a game currently.

But yes, Steam will fully saturate a network in any household. Why their complaint of downloading a game on their PC limited the rest of the household available bandwidth.

This is of course providing you have a good routing to the download server of choice and good node hops.

That's how it's worked since forever.
