Hello! A person DM'ed me on Discord, claiming my account is pending to be banned after 24-hours for ''Ilegal Purchase''

I just don't know how this is possible, and if that's honestly true I'm worried about my account now. So the person provided me with pictures that my account is on hold to be banned, and asked me to help them convince the Steam moderator to lift the pending ban, to add them on Discord, etc.

Is that a scam in some sort of way? I honestly don't know.

Thank you... I honestly was trembling a little, because it seemed so legit. I even told the people from the server that this person might try to scam someone else, and to ban them. They started harrasing me and making me look like I'm the scammer... It was about an item ''Karambit | Fade" for 250$ I think it was, the person claimed they didn't get their money through the buyer and that the buyer's profile linked it to my profile.

That's basically it. Thank you that you're not also harrasing me like the people from that server, I felt really bad to be honest.

NO WAYY the same scam happened to me, initially thought someone impersonated me but then they really tried to urge me to email steam valve support, i didnt even remotely trust the email they sent so i was gonna appeal to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ steam support email in the morning, fortunately i researcehd the scam bc im too lazy to write an entire essay over a scam which i found people discussing on reddit, apparantly the person who "impersonated" me bought an item for 850$ and the money hanst been recieved. btw the scammer is some rando who added me from out of the blue n i still have them on my friendslist howd u meet said scammed? did they also add u unexpectedly

Well, that's the thing I never got added. It was a message from a Discord member, onto me, because we shared a server together. And that's when happened. I didn't got scammed though, I even told them that Steam won't just ban my account like this without having at least sending me an Email that I'm gonna lose my account. They told me they were investigating my account for the Fraud. I was like: ''Okay, is fine then, let them investigate it. I didn't do anything wrong anyway, so I can't get banned, because they can check everything on my account and find if I did a Fraud or anything in that regard''. And they started talking like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥: ''I won't be calm like this mate'' and stuff like that, and people from the server started harassing me, that I'm the scammed myself and I need to get banned from the server, further because of my stupidity I tried to make them believe me by showing proofs by Steam themselves, they still continued and I left the server. I'm so angry & tilted right now.

Yeah, I felt that. I'm never ever enabling my DM's on Discord, ever again. It was my biggest mistake, I had such a chill night and a scammer made me stressed. Thankfully I used my common sense, and I was like: ''They told me the Steam moderator was investigating my account, I know I didn't do anything wrong, they'll see that I'm innocent and I won't be banned''

Yeah, I felt that. I'm never ever enabling my DM's on Discord, ever again. It was my biggest mistake, I had such a chill night and a scammer made me stressed. Thankfully I used my common sense, and I was like: ''They told me the Steam moderator was investigating my account, I know I didn't do anything wrong, they'll see that I'm innocent and I won't be banned''

As a general rule of thumb. Valve is never contact you directly via any kind of chat. All is done via the notification system and account alerts built into the client itself.

Yes, I was like I knew I didn't do anything wrong. And I doubt Steam will falsely perma-ban my account for ''Fraud Purchase'', also it was a hillarious excuse. They told me someone bought their item, and they didn't get their money and that the buyer's profile linked it to my profile. I was like, it just doesn't make sense, but when they sent me an image, the Valve employee's profile was legit! And the link was correct, but I found a RED flag after investigating a little, you know on top left of the Steam Support site, there's words: My Recent Tickets and etc. Is usually with high capitals, because I wrote a ticket instead of doing something stupid. And his letters were with low ones, and that's how I figured it out it's a scam, also the profile was suspicious. But I got scared for my account, that's all.

I say this because the "industry" that is the scamming industry is taking billions of dollars a year.

And why are people even falling for a DM on a totally different platform?

Dont you think that if steam had an issues with you, they would contact you with your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ email account that you supplied?

Which i would not trust either, by the way. I would email steam using an address i found here first before i even clicked on anything in that email. I would also look at the email header to find the real sender's address of that email.

If the address is not from steam then its a scammer.

People spend thousands on PC hardware but are dumb as bricks sometimes.

Ahh i forgot u can dm people from mutual servers my bad. u undoubtedly had a way worse experience than I did and and I honestly feel sorry for u😭😭. Dont worry most of the members were probably in on the scam so regardless of what u did ud still get attacked, since what u did was reasonable and u refusing to secure ur OWNNN account doesnt affect him in any way so why would he turn aggressive? also was it a Server u cherished a lot but felt forced to leave due to the continuous attacks?? if yes I could always join the server and troll the scammer or like harrass them, ive got nothing to rn and im up for something fun

It was a Discord server I was in, because it was one of my favourite streamer's own Discord.
Anyway, I didn't got scammed. I immediatly found out it doesn't make sense, but I was still scared so I made a support ticket and Steam responsed to me today, confirming, that this was indeed a scam attempt.
