Or perhaps someone at Valve was bored and decided they wanted to make this change.
For that matter, the star was fairly similar to the cogwheel (properties) icon, so for low-sighted people, this is a good change.
The star looking like a cog wheel makes the most logical sense for poor vision. Though I think if they simply implemented an accessibility feature for the entire program that highlighted things more for those same people would be even better. But a heart is where it stopped.
