When I looked on Dec 31st, it said Jan 2.

It was always the 2nd.

It said Jan 2 PST on the banner the whole sale. It ended on the third for some countries because of timezones, but the banner still said Jan 2 PST. Plus, there was a countdown timer on each product page for the last 48 hours or so, letting you know exactly how many hours were left.

Maybe remember it wrong, and got confused with something else? Because it been Jan 2nd with end date.
