Sim-racing / simcade games that don't have focus on track racing?
The thing that always put me off with simracing games is they always just... race on tracks. That is so boring!

I become a lot fond of rally games lately because there is the difficulty of a simcade game there but it's so varied and not just track racing. My favorite is Dirt 4 (no longer purchasable) that I just happened to have on my steam, I grabbed it and loved it. There is 2 handling modes, gamer and simulator. I played on gamer but I still had to put more effort into my driving because I was in a high difficulty (which turn some assists off) and the tracks aren't just move forward.

But I want more. The only genre of racing that seems to satisfy this for me is rally racing. I admit forza horizon could possibly do it for me as well but waiting for a better discount. What's other things I should try out?

If you enjoy rally racing, you might want to check out some of the following games on Steam:

Dirt Rally 2.0 - the successor to Dirt 4, it offers a more realistic and challenging experience with a wider range of cars and tracks.

WRC 9 - the official game of the FIA World Rally Championship, it features all the licensed teams, drivers, and tracks from the 2020 season.

Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO - this game lets you drive some of the most iconic rally cars of all time, including those driven by the nine-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb.

Richard Burns Rally - while this game is quite old (released in 2004), it is still considered by many to be the most realistic rally simulator ever made.

Project Cars 2 - while not strictly a rally game, it offers a wide variety of racing disciplines, including rallycross and rally raid, as well as a dynamic weather system that can drastically affect the track conditions.

These games should offer you plenty of variety and challenge, and allow you to further explore your love of rally racing.

Have fun bro !
I'd also say look at PCars 2 as the variation is nice.

for a "retro" gambit try tge Mistown Madness series, they probably look dated now vut they basically say "start here go here, how you fo so is up to you"

fun fact: I was a mate of Richard Burns at school but I never played his game :(

OP, here is something off the beaten path that might interest you. I will say in advance that some people despise the navigation aspect, but it sounds like it might be what you are looking for.

This, like the real Dakar is a navigation point race discipline. You need to use orientation skills to find your route. There are no tracks/courses.

Ya, it was removed last year...licensing.

You might want to look at Dirt 1 or 2, or the WRC series as mentioned above.
