Anyways if Microsoft go full R* then you see backlash not just consumers, but investors, publishers, and devs because they will be affected too where they all have to pay a subscription fee just to use an OS, which basically cause people to extend support for current OS that sustainable, or consider branching off to Linux, just like how unity try to screw everyone almost cause everyone to leave their engine to go all over the place, or even out right changing their game engines on their future, and existing projects which why cause unity to panic to reverse their bad decisions.
But we'll find out by 2030, or sooner, whenever w12 happens.
Experience of the world tells me it is high probability.
So it would not surprise me at all if 12 is when they finally push it, and it also would not surprise me if it comes with a yearly subscription cost. It might even be what finally gets me to try linux.
"Hey everyone, Windows 12 is FREE! That's right, free! Go ahead and upgrade today!!! Oh, by the way if you want to unlock most of the features, or be able to modify anything, you need to upgrade from basic to full edition. But it's only 9.99/month, and even better we'll give you a yearly subscription for only $99!"
I assume maybe AI assistant, maybe windows defender, but I doubt it be anything actually crazy that stop anyone from using the OS, or running 3rd software that not from the windows store. There some people believe that W12 is gonna be all cloud base OS only, and have to rent out the hardware like how on Nvidia GeForce now basically which I'm super doubtful that what W12 is all about, but I wouldn't be shock there be another version of it that cloud base which they been doing for years already, as you can rent cloud computing already from Microsoft.
It seems that article has been debunked as rumormongering already. But the concept of SaaS has been something that the industry has been looking at for over a decade. Some software already operates on that model like Office 365, Adobe, and Acronis. Anti-virus programs like McAfee and Norton have done it for a while. MMO's have been doing it for almost 30 years. It's been the norm for television since Cable/Fiber took over in the late 80's/early 90's and has only grown with the streaming services like Netflix. Heck you can now even pay a monthly subscription to get anything and everything from your dinners to designer shoes. It really has become the norm.
Will it happen with the consumer version of Windows? Who knows, except for Microsoft. Considering that the consumer versions have had free upgrades since Vista or 7 iirc, it doesn't seem likely. I see it happening more for the business side of things, like Office 365 has been doing.
And an extremely legitimate reason for it.
