A couple of questions about Windows 7 in 2024.
So it's been made clear that Steam will no longer support Windows 7 after Jan 2024.

But what exactly does this mean?

Does it mean that Steam simply won't get anymore updates? But we can still play our games in the "offline" mode?

Or does it literally mean that once Jan 2024 comes all of a sudden we wont be able to launch Steam at all and get an error message even while being offline? Currently the way Steam works is if we don't have an internet connection it will simply ask us if we want to use "offline" mode to play our games.

I did some googling but can't seem to find an answer to my specific question. All I find are people complaining (about the end of support) or the typical "Just upgrade to windows 10/11) people telling them to upgrade.

and yes before you anyone here tells me to upgrade, my main PC is a modern gaming rig with Windows 11.

I'm simply asking because I am using my old PC (8700k) as a Windows 7 PC for legacy games and just for the fun of it.

I recently formatted it and installed a clean copy of 7 of it with all the updates. So I would like to add some of my old Steam games on it.

Helpful comments will be greatly appreciated.

Some people think that if you use Windows 7 and connect to the internet, you're just randomly going to get hacked, that is not how computing works and I can't stress that enough. Viruses are done by 99% of the action of the user and if you get a virus on your PC, it is more than likely your fault.

I'm still gonna be using Windows 7 until I get a new PC, I know that my PC is more than capable of running Windows 10 but I just don't like running Windows 10 on my hardware, it doesn't run good for long tasks and things like that. Windows 7 in my opinion is the better OS period.

That depends on the vulnerability that wasnt patched.
Also you dont just connect a pc to the internet, and not using said internet.

Sounds like your PC is just broken. It happens as hardware gets older.

That is actually EXACTLY how it works in the situation with Windows 7. If anyone on Windows 7 uses chrome to browse the internet then they can load a virus into their computer at any time just from loading a website. If a virus is loaded in this manner then it can not be detected by anti-virus software and won't even alert the user that it happened.

Additionally the use of any internet-enabled software that is using some older version to remain functional in Windows 7 is also another avenue for virus entry.

You are wrong there. Windows 10 has the exact same system requirements as Windows 7. Any computer that can run Windows 7 also can run Windows 10 just fine.

So here's the thing, right? Someone tried 8 malware samples in Windows 7 and the crazy thing is that... They don't run! Modern malware doesn't even work on Windows 7, It's only older malware that's already been documented and already patched.

There is no "old malware" or "modern malware". If you remain on windows 7 you are significantly more vulnerable than someone using Windows 10. That is a proven FACT. You can not deny FACTS. Also there are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of different types of malware out there. Just because some random 8 don't work in Win7 does not mean you are safe from the thousands on thousands of other types out there.

Chinese and Russian hackers will be with you momentarily if you're still using Win7...
Why would they care about some normal person?
They don't waste time hacking some random dude just because he has Windows 7.

I don't think anyone really gives a damm about that bud.
Most of us are just simple gamers who go to work, come home, game. etc.
WTH makes you think we are so important as to waste time and resources hacking some no names gaming PC?
Get a clue.

companies definitely don't want to be responsible for your account security if you are using outdated OS.

What makes you think that they need to waste time if the exploit still works because there are no security updates?

Don't tell them they are hacking big companies like MS every week because now most things are spyware like Windows 10 and it sends everything to MS servers. Other than very low tier adware and very specific targeted attacks theres no market for classic malware anymore. There's 0 reason to bother attempting to hack into individual PCs anymore when all valuable data is stored on cloud service now. Anyone who keeps saying this bs just doesn't actually know how things work or is literally the type to click on hot locals in your area ads (which also most likely wont give you any malware nowdays instead will just collect your personal info which they can sell off or attempt to get into accounts with) or fell for the PR bs just so they can attempt to justify choosing to use terrible software like modern Windows because they know thats the case, if it wasn't there wouldn't be a need to constantly try to defend it, in most cases it's a combination of all of the above.

They never are, they constantly deflect every time they get hacked and they are right. It's your fault for using cloud services and spyware and expect not to have everything leaked all over the place, that is the one and only purpose they have.

Its easier to hack a random computer, than trying to get into a cloud fascility. So nothing changed.

Currently malware gets sold as abonnement. So way more people than before "can" do it.

Also bots or drive by malware does not care much what you use. If a vulnerability is found by them, they use it. They dont say then: Oh its win 7 and not win 10.

No "professional" hacker is going to waste his TIME hacking some randoms PC.
Are you not aware that time is money? They are looking to make a buck.
It's quite obvious that some random Windows 7 user in 2024 doesn't have any.

They are looking to make money, the only users who should be even slightly concerned about using an outdated os would be small businesses who work from home.
