Yeah that's definitely possible, but I believe its a bug because the change would make no sense at all.
It would be really stupid from Valve to remove one of the small "benefits" of leveling up. Surely they want to give users some incentive to level up since it makes Valve some extra cash, and doesn't cost them a dime.
Good luck with that.
The real question is whether they should be more focused on activities instead of static things. For example, maybe putting the last few interactions on the top, or taking online/offline into consideration. Basically, can Steam get to a state where opening the friend list gives you the one you're looking for in the top-5 in most cases, or something like that.
For people with smaller friend lists. alphabetic is probably the most appropriate. There's a reason why phonebooks are sorted alphabetically, not by age or something like that. However, there's also a reason why we've had "favorites" since forever...
That was my first though too, except the friend list were sorted by name for years already. So it got me confused, what the deal was. I looked / skipped over few thready until I found the answer here:
So it's not your own friendlist they are talkin, but the friendlist of other players, advertising how... uhm... "professional" friends are.
With this bit of information, I see how some people are unhappy with the changes. As the sidebar on the profile only provides space for few friends, you probably want to showcase the best of them?
Same way you probably want to show the rarest achievments, not sorted by name or date added.
Btw, if you check my profile, you will see how much I care for that feature. No at all - its a private profile.
So while I dont a give a crap about the sorting for profile showcase purpose, I can fully support the people who want it back.
For my purpose - finding friends on my own friendlist - it were sorted by name all the time. To faster find them, I had already tagged/categorized them into groups.
It not sorted alphabetically on mine. It's sorted by recent logins.
As for the profile page listing, you ought to be able to pin or hide anyone to it in any order you choose. Again, there is no reason to force only one type of sorting, or any type for that matter.
It's sorted by In-game Alphabetically, and then online alphabetically.
