I think I'm gonna look into some custom campaigns but so far with the few that I have tried, they have been buggy and it was kind of a turnoff.

Honestly I wish age of empires 2 would just come out with more dlc campaigns or an age of empires 4 DLC for more campaigns.

Try 0 A.D. Free and open source that started as a mod to AoE 2.

Also you can check:
C&C Red Alert 3, Lotr Battle of Middle Earth 2, Rise of Nations.

The game has 3 campaigns and its gameplay is very similar to AoE.

Empires is available on GOG.

C&C3 Single Player Campaign. :)
And the expansion too.

C&C4 sucks - the concept of game changed a LOT so would not recommend that one.

i grabbed praetorians hd remaster. gonna give that another shot. didn't like it in the past but im desperate for more games with good campaigns and everyone says that game is excellent

I like the idea of cossacks but the execution of the latest cossacks re release was terrible.

Basically abandonware now.
