Scam - Girl gamers
Just want to put a warning out there, there are people claiming to be "sugar daddies" targetting women. To me its kinda obvious, but in case someone has been contacted and is trying to find if its a known scam.

They will try to convince you to buy a steam gift card, from a store near you. Claiming they can use it to give you thousands of dollars. That the card is just to pay for transaction fees. (YOU WILL NEVER NEED TO SPEND MONEY TO GET MONEY) I talked to this guy cause I've always wanted to stick it to a scammer XD

Well.I tried to search anything on it, and found nothing. It wasn't so well known that I had ever heard of it. I'm just trying to help any fellow gals out.

So, just a variation of the Nigerian Prince scam, huh?

This "sugar daddy" stuff is a scam in itself, so... karma?

It's called "Catfishing", and it's been around for as long as the Internet has been around.
And since it happened on Instagram, perhaps posting your PSA there- where the scammers are picking targets- might be more appropriate. And reporting it there under the Scams & Fraud category might do a lot more good than posting about it on Steam, since Valve has no part in it.

1st rule of detecting a scam
Ah yes, the new form of "You just won an brandnew Iphone 4! Click here to get it! But first now fill out all these useless data things for other websites and download this unmarked folder and install it. Oh dear it seem you went offline.."

This is a non issue. Girls looking for a sugar daddy are the scammers. Who the F cares if a scammer gets scammed?

Shame on the girls looking for a sugar daddy.
Shame on the guys taking advantage of the girls greed.
SHAME ON BOTH.

I wish i had a sugar Mommy.

I waan't looking for a sugar daddy. He approached me randomly and it set of red flags immediately. The reason I'm poating it here, is because they try to get you to purchase STEAM gift cards. Look, there's nothing wrong with trying to help others. No, it's not good that sugar babies don't just get off their a** and work and earn their living. But some people in the world exiat who aren't so savvy about scammers. My mother was a victim once (not this scam, obviously) but the point is, I feel for those who are truly innocent. There really shouldn't need to be an issue of people chastising me for wanting to be a good person.

First red flag: A Steam gift card for real money.

It is like those scams where the IRS will take gift cards.

Thank you very much Kimiiya for the educational/PSA post. Educational post are always helpful for people wanting to pick up some tips. As for the complaint posts about "it is already known" or "this is not the right place" type of responses, rest assure your post does have value. I for one knew about different forms of catfish scams but the different forms of catfish besides Nigerian prince, I did not hear about "sugar daddies" one yet.

Thank you, stay safe, and have a great time gaming.
