What was Valve/Steam's biggest failure you can think of?
For me, it would be the Greenlight feature which was replaced by Steam Direct

Selling a CS bundle with all the games, then deleting CS source from all the players that bought the bundle as it was an "accident"
yeah... a ACCIDENT is when i get screwed.

Allowing political/religious topics on the forums.

I was just about to say that exact thing.

I say it's a lack of quality control. Back then, you had to have created a really damn good game to get on Steam. There may have been less games overall, but every game was at least very good. Now a days, Steam has become the $5 movie bucket at Walmart, where 90% of the stuff in there is direct-to-TV, micro-budget trash. Hell, there are games being sold on here that don't even work after you finish installing and downloading them. You have to download a dozen or so fan patches to get them running properly.

ROFLMAO, you should look at some of the early games steam had, they were hardly quality.

Them not doing nothing about scams.
There isnt much steam can do to prevent people from falling for scams outside of steam...
Also surprised no one has said the video store yet.

The first 3rd party game ever on Steam is a low quality game that would now be considered trash/shovelware/garbage/etc. You also missed the loads of others.

Either you haven't actually used Steam since the beginning or you're severely suffering from gogglitis nostalgius. Whichever it is, your observation is not based on reality.

Lo and behold the first third party game ever sold on Steam!

Not allowing users to display previously unlocked badge levels. After all, we paid for them, so it's silly always displaying the latest badge. An option to display previously unlocked levels would be great as well.
I also think the inventory system is a catastrophic mess and the fact there isn't a secure 2FA element to remove unwanted item bloat just adds to the frustrations with it. I have a few standalone tabs for items of games I don't play and may have only played once yet there are hundreds of jumbled emotes, avatars and other stuff littered around.

There's no useful sorting filter or ways we can manually sort i.e move items to to a 'trash' section. I am also fed up of listing junk from 2018 for £0.01, the item not selling and then returning back in 6 months only to have to relist, rinse and repeat.

This is the most archaic part of the client and it desperately needs an overhaul. We've been begging for almost 9 years now and nothing has changed.
I'd go with Paid Mods. It could work if they made an incentive to make great mods and then enable users to charge for one mod.

Also they have to keep the previous files up so that they can't just delete and re upload all of them as paid.

Not a secure 2FA element? What?
It sounds like you want to manually accept all listing with the Steam mobilephone app but that wouldn't make any sense. The phone app is secure enough btw.

Valve removed the need to accept listing with 2FA if the value was low quite some time ago.
Also items being in a certain game category that you will never see unless you specifically go there isn't going to be a problem.
The main tab yes, but not on the other game tabs.

If your trash isn't selling at £0.01 there is no change that would fix it.
The forums. I consider them only slightly better than 4chan.

Their lack of proper moderation, and their responses in handling reports are slow and inconsistent at best.
The Steam launch was pretty bad.

Also this.

Man I bet all the people who were cheering when the volunteer mods were let go, were eating crow the very next day..........

HL2 requiring a Steam Account and the client to launch in order to play was quite the bumpy road. Lots of nasties were thrown at Valve those days.

Kind of fun seeing how many things the colective mind has swept under the rug.

Actually, it is a lot better when steam employees take over. No more harsher punishment or unjustified ban.

You realize if they were involved almost all the troublemakers and all of their alts would have permanent forum bans and likely permanent community bans right?

I would welcome the HQ employees to deal with such individuals by being involved in the community, that would clean it up very quickly.
