Did we? I don't recall getting a memo stating this. I doubt the vast number of other people who buy Early Access games every week, did either.
But then, I've never once felt the need to pay more just to play a game a few days earlier than someone else. You need to learn to overcome your FOMO. Try waiting a few months or years before buying the games you want to play (Early Access branded or not) and then you'll never have FOMO again.
I honestly can't imagine feeling like that.
Of course, I haven't "hyped" for a game in decades. I wish people would stop, all it leads to is disappointment when games don't live up to unrealistic expectations.
And I certainly never do that. Why would I want to spoil a game that I want to play?
Really, everything you describe sounds self-inflicted.
Must be hard to have no self control and letting others decide what you want.....
That said, I don't buy many big/new games in any given year. Like 0-2 usually.
Not really a scam in my eyes.
The games I've bought early haven't had that problem. Even Cyberpunk2077 ran pretty well on my PC and the bugs where maybe one or two every few hour. But it being a GTA like game it became more of a laugh. One bug that was a major one was when cars had the wrong drive path and literally drove through barriers and then kept honking the horn because something damages their car.
I don't think it's a matter of not knowing better. They just don't share your view, don't care (because it's a non-issue from their perspective), or conclude that getting to play a game as early as possible is well worth the cost and "risk" (there is no real risk on Steam since you can refund pre-orders before release and you still get the two hours too).
Personally I don't see an issue. I don't get why people would pay more for a few days extra, but I don't get why people pre-order in todays age either. But if other people want it, they're free to spend their money as they like. And I can't fault devs/pubs for offering it when enough of their players show they want it.
People always point towards the companies, but forget where the voting power lies. And as is often enough with voting, people might find out that their vote isn't the majority. Which then sadly turns into "they don't know better".
Always keep in mind, wallets speak louder than forum posts.
that's why I believe threads complaining about it get more word out about it, then doing/saying nothing, thus hopefully getting the attention of people who enable these companies to keep doing it, or thinking up new ways to do it after their last attempts lose its allure.
me personally, I vote with my wallet, on all aspects of the game, the devs and w/e else surrounds said company and it's products, be it pricing, nickle and diming with dlc's that have little to no content, politics, how devs react to customer complaints/any issues, bugs, or anything else I haven't mentioned off the top of my head.
