Can i turn my PC into Steam Machine
My old Windows 10 PC is running very well. Unfortunately Microsoft will end support next year. Valve hasn’t released SteamOS 3.0 for PC yet but do you think i can install SteamOS unofficially?

If you have the know-how and the files, I don't see why not. But don't take my word for it, I do not have the know-how, files, nor the access to grant such permissions if it would be illegal. Probably should use at least the spec shown in their Deck.

Why not just install a regular flavour of Linux? Steam and proton function well on all the big ones. It's wild how well windows games run on Linux with proton.

Only downside is loss of clientside gamepass.

with the little knowledge i have with SteamOS, Maybe possible to turn your pc into a steam machine. but with the articles i read regarding previous versions, it was a pain in the back to install on a system.

But why not use another Linux OS? seeing as SteamOS is a form linux OS

Win10 is not going to "stop working very well" in a year from now just because they stop supporting it... *facepalm*

Steam will work on Windows 10 for some time after Microsoft stops supporting it. We got about 3 years of support for Windows 7-8 after support ended.

SteamOS isn't ready for use outside of the Steam Deck yet, and trying to make it work anyway, while a fun project for some, isn't recommended for the average user who just wants a day-to-day system for playing games. For this you can use one of the multitudes of other Linux distros.

If you still want that SteamOS kind of experience though, you might try Bazzite[bazzite.gg]. It's not SteamOS, but it's a very good and stable Linux distro based on Fedora that's set up to sort of mimic the way SteamOS works. You'll get the Fedora Atomic desktop environment and a lot of gaming specific features pre-installed by default.

If you just want a general purpose OS and don't need that SteamOS kind of approach, you can use Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Pop! OS, or any of the other hundreds of distros out there. One isn't necessarily better than the other for gaming.

yes you can and it's very easy, just like installing an OS, I had a laptop I installed the old steamOS on and it took no extra effort on my part, though I'm very familiar with PC's.

I don't know when they will finally released steamOS, but I'll be trying it out when it does release.

there is holo steamOS, you can look it up and while I have read and been told it's decent, I'm personally going to wait for the official steamOS from valve.

that said, I would suggest waiting for the official version, or if you are worried, just "upgrade" it to win 11 for the time being, but that's your choice.

edit: use what you want, don't let others tell you what to use and if it's steamOS that you want to use, then go for it.

Just use a normal version of Linux, valve has more attention to that now anyway so the experience will probably be better

I don’t want to pay for bloatware. I just figured that if I’m going for Linux, why not get Steam OS? I love using Steam OS on my Deck.

did you look at any of the other Linux distro's? in case valve takes forever to release SteamOS 3

Steam OS is just a slightly modified linux with the steam client open in Big picture mode.
No idea why people would want that if they can get the same with other distros.......

the OP wants steamOS, thats their choice.

as mentioned in my last comment, the OP can try "holo steamOS", or wait for valve to release the official version.

that said and I have used it, steamOS is a great option if they simply want a less demanding OS strictly for games, it also has its Linux desktop based on arch, though most will likely not bother with the desktop and simply just play their games.

key note, OP said "old PC, to install steamOS 3", so I assume they have a newer one for daily driving, meaning the old one has no use beyond games, though my assumption could be wrong.
