Same reason people farm for karma and likes on Reddit or other social media.
That's really the basic psychology behind it.
That and some people do sell points on third party sites by giving awards to profiles that pay them.
Some people have multiple accounts solely to farm points from eye-catching bait posts.
If that is true, and they are doing that - they just created a black market for sh1t posts.
This isn't a large motivating factor of course. I think a majority of people doing it for the points just want to hoard so they can see the number go up.They don't buy the badges because that'd lower the number.
It is an open place for sharing your ideas. Don't tell me you didn't expect some people to abuse that and push the envelope as far as they can?
I really don't pay attention to the points. You know why? Because another problem some people have is the desire/necessity to be #1 no matter what. There are some things you really shouldn't be doing whatever you can to be #1 at and this is one of them.
Also, the people who already made bait/troll/etc threads, now can get more feedback on whether they successfully triggered people - not only do they get responses, they get a score! Even more reason for them to continue to spew out random trash to try to anger people.
(also, you're just starting to see this? It's been wide-spread across Steam since the award system went live. It's a decent fraction of the posts on Discussion and especially Off Topic.)
Tell me about it. I'm constantly bewildered by humans. No joke, as a child I read parenting books to try and figure out what the hell goes on in adult's heads.
ahhhhhh, now that makes sense. Steam points have a market value. There you go, mystery solved.
