I have zero interaction with anything other than singleplayer on my brother's account.
Correction :
*without knowing what the game is.
If we know what the game is then it is entirely possible to get someone who is knowledgeable about that specific game to tell us how save data is handled - or just look into it ourselves.
If a specific game is not named, though, then how save data is handled could, indeed, vary wildly between titles.
It should just use the files that are already there.
Save files are where you're going to face the biggest issue.
Some games have a file menu & some games don't let you switch files, instead.
Some games create a separate save file for each account ID & some just save it in a local directory, instead.
In the event that you are playing a game that doesn't let you switch files & just saves files in a local directory, you'll find yourself playing on your brother's save file (not account) despite having switched to your own account.
I know that a lot of indie games like Snakebird do this & it's not really a good way to handle save data - now that said, some of the time you can just copy the files out of the save folder but you need to be careful that you don't trigger VAC by messing around with save files.
100% Orange Juice, for example, has VAC even though it's sort of indie.
Contact the developer if you run into any issues or have any concerns.
Then do it legitimately through the Steam Family Sharing feature.
Also, there's literally, in the top left corner of the client, the option to choose : "Steam" >> "Change Account...", so both using the same computer doesn't amount to sharing accounts by default.
But yes, make sure you're actually switching accounts.
There's a lot of reasons for this that are worth making their own topic about if you really want to know the exact details of why - although, simply asking the question will lead to a lot of people accusing you (with no basis) of some pretty ugly things so... maybe just do things correctly & don't question it if you want to avoid all of that.
All of the rest of this I agree with :
On the topic of switching between accounts, what kind of things would I be accused of?
You're fine most games allow more than 1 save file so even if same PC different accounts you'll be fine nothing to worry about at all. So have fun and enjoy your games.
Huh that has nothing do with it you can far as I know still upload to workshop in family share (i could be wrong I'd have to double check that statement) it will be on your account to. all you share is the library of games long as you uncheck the sharing of everything else. Though if you get vac banned you'll hurt him to lol. My nephew about screwed me that way so i had to revoke him i warned him i caught him cheating in an online game I'd revoke and never trust him again with family share. I caught him cheating in gtav his own game but still cheats in his own games he'll cheat in mine know how he is.
Well don't worry about all that stuff prior you asking about it's perfectly legal in regard to the steam ToS to use multiple accounts on same pc they actually encourage that more so than sharing accounts, that is actually against ToS lol. Hard to enforce it but ToS states not to. Harder to catch i guess when shared on same PC they probably go more after those who share like say guy from usa lets a guy from UK use his account. So yea no worries on being accused of anything just buy game it's already installed so no worries and just make new save and off you to the lands of fantasy and wonder. take care and happy gaming!
The question would be,
"What are the reasons that you should switch accounts on a computer shared with family members?"
I might have had a different question in mind earlier because this one doesn't seem as bad, but still...
Problem is, we have a few regulars that assume people are petty & thieving, which they then respond to these assumptions instead of just addressing the question being asked, as it's being asked, & also sometimes they don't read so well.
So, I forget what all I had in mind when I said that earlier, but I imagine if you asked the question, people would accuse you of violating the subscriber agreement, or trying to get around the subscriber agreement, of sharing accounts with your whole family, of not being old enough to meet the age requirements, of pirating games through usage of another's account, some might even suggest that you've stolen your brother's account.
The primary reason you should switch accounts, by the way, is because, in accordance with the Steam terms & Support's stance, "It is your responsibility to ensure that your own account is secure" & if you aren't switching out of your account when you're done, then you're responsible for everything that someone else does with your account & Support won't help you fix it. Brother or friend trade away your items, or get you banned on a forum, or VAC banned? Oh well. The terms say it's your responsibility to secure your own account.
Which, by the way, the legitimate way to do this without violating the subscriber agreement is to use the Steam Family Sharing feature :
If you haven't been using Family Sharing, though, please don't tell us about it.
Aside from your post saying that you played your brother's game, even Steam Support has no way of knowing that it wasn't him playing the game, if it was on his account - but please do things the correct way in the future, just to make sure you don't get in trouble with Steam Support.
I don't understand what the fuss is about. It may be worth mentioning that I live with my brother. His bedroom is literally a stone's throw from mine. And I only log into his account once every few months, at least.
Friendly advice I'd just let this go and go enjoy your games. It's going in a direction gonna lead to ruin for you both. just a friendly heads up. Not worth arguing or making the fuss worse. Let it go slayer trust me let it go. Really no fuss from the guy (think he overly explains though) He just letting you know account sharing is banable in steam's eyes, even if you live in same home even if it is your brother's daddy's mommies sisters cousins. They usually don't catch people like this because they have no proof but admitting it publicly kinda telling on yourself. (not forum rules you be breaking with shared account it's the ToS that was agreed to for all of steam) I personally don't care what you do how you do it, but I didn't write the ToS. Take care and happy gaming!
