Anyway, if you're into big-budget gaming only then yes, gaming might just as well be dead to you and you're better off looking for another hobby.
This happens. I speak from own experience, there's a couple of games in my library which are REALLY good, which I've spent several hundred hours in, yet which I wouldn't want to play anymore because I'm absolutely done with those games, seen all what those have to offer and playing them became more routine than fun.
The solution is to simply play different games.
Stop worrying about how much time is "wasted". If you're enjoying yourself, you're not wasting time.
If you're not enjoying war sims, and let's face it, those can get old real fast, then find something else. Racing? Fighting? Puzzles? Adventure? What do you want to experience? Whatever it is, unless it's amazingly niche, you're going to find a game that focuses on it.
I get my game recommendations from external channels, mostly. RockPaperShotgun is a good source of (p)reviews. Ars Technica isn't exactly gaming-centric but got some good reviews as well. Then there's YT channels I can personally recommend, that would be GManLives and IcarusLives (similar names are pure coincidence). There's also the series "WTF is" which isn't running anymore as the dude succumbed to cancer, you still can look up his reviews though.
I said "mostly" earlier and that's because I do follow Steam's recommendations every now and then. That is when looking at a store page of a game I really enjoyed, I look for the "similar to this" part at the bottom of the store page and look there.
Then there's user reviews. Shameless self-plug: you can go through my reviews and see if some of the games there tickle your fancy.
Finally, knowing what you actually want is quite important. You're saying you don't want to spend years of your life with war sims, yet you're talking about nothing else in this thread (except that tiny jab @ Mario). You know what you don't want, that is war sims. Do you know what you want?
