So, where do you think Steam will be in about 15 years?
Steam is basically the only place you can buy games and enjoy the community around them.

You have the option of going to other places, like Origin or Desura, but they aren't nearly as good as Steam is in terms of the accessability of games and such a large community.

I think in the future, Steam will have become THE big boy. Valve will have out matched Microsoft and Sony, bypassing them and making the other competetors obselete.

And personally, I wouldn't mind that. If Valve kept up with the way they treat Steam now, as they do in the future (with a bit more content control in terms of what games get greenlit cough cough AIR CONTROL cough cough ) then I see no problem with them being the 'world power' in the gaming industry.

I dunno, maybe I just like getting my games cheap and storing them effectively.

What do you guys think?

in 15 years steam will just be another mobile platform as traditional gaming will all be dead, sacrificed by crappy indie F2P mobile games.
I think Steam will always be up there with Xbox and PlayStation but who knows where they will really go from here. It's already such a vast program.
Steam will stay on top! Unless some bully comes by and knock it over :o
Well, in 15 years, I have no doubt that clients like Origin and UPlay will be gone, cause they are steadily going down now and the overall user base hates both of them. So once again, Steam will be the place to get all games. As someone who has been on Steam for 5 years now, there is no place I would rather game at.

The way console gaming is going, I think we're going to see a constant rise in PC gaming. PC gaming has been on the rise cause real gamers realize that the next gen consoles are already lagging behind even mid ranged PC rigs. I don't know if console gaming will still be around in 15 years, but I don't imagine they'll see many graphical improvements either. I'm not saying this as a PC elitist, cause I was an almost 100% console exclusive gamer from around '09 to '13, with only playing a few games on Steam. Console gaming will never be able to match PC and more and more people are starting to realize that, which is why Steam is growing larger everyday. Plus with Sony having constant financial problems and Nintendo having practically no sales, Microsoft is the only one staying profitable.

Now to wrap up the OP's question: Unless Vavle does something monumentally stupid and just effs up Steam, I imagine in 15 yrs that Steam will be in the forefront for gaming.

I does not appear that UPlay or Origin are deterring people from buying their games, ME3, Titanfall, Ass Creed and Watch_Dogs sold well, or at least well enough. Given the situation now, I don't think this will happen.

I would not be surprised if in 15 years time we'll have Activision and Zenimax launching their own services to be honest.

PC gaming might be more popular now than before, but OEMs computer manufacterers aren't in a good place right now, and building your own machine to play games on is still a hobby or skill for a minority of PC gamers. Which is possibly one of the reasons Valve invested in the Steam Machine concept. If Steam wants to overtake the consoles, something "console like" has to succeed.

Sony and Nintendo may not be in the best situation right now, but both companies are still many, many times larger than Valve are.

Origin and Uplay are only seeing large sales and game trafficking numbers because they force you to play their games their clients. If they went back to putting EA and Ubi games on Steam, to where you only had to be on Steam to play them, do you really think those clients would still be around? I don't think EA and Ubi will disappear, but I think their clients will. Of course it won't happen overnight, but in 15 years, most likely they'll be gone unless they drastically change their services. And your right about Activision and other places making their own clients. Most likely in the next few years we'll see many rise and fall. But I think Steam is the one that's going to stick around and be there when all the dust settles.

As for Sony and Nintendo, I think Nintendo will survive cause they do have a nice financial cushion to fall on, but Sony is just bleeding. Their console is one of the only things keeping them afloat right now. Unless something change for them, they'll continue to be in hot water.

Yeah, I'm expecting a lot of clients like Steam to show up really soon. I mean, look at its popularity and usage, Its a money-maker.

I wouldn't mind more clients, but I expect if that happens that these companies will no longer want to put their games on steam...

Well duh, but the point is their games still sell very well despite the protests you hear online. If they didn't, they would have changed tack already.

If they went back to putting EA and Ubi games on Steam, to where you only had to be on Steam to play them, do you really think those clients would still be around?

Seeing as that has exactly occurred already, yes. Remember, Origin itself was a replacement for a download service already operated by EA, if they do get rid of Origin (a possibility sure, but remote one still) they would likely only replace it with something else still.

15 years is an long time, for all we know Steam could be gone and replaced by an less ♥♥♥♥♥♥ OnLive alternative. If Origin and UPlay won't be around in 15 years time, I would not be surprised that Steam would be gone too.

As for Sony and Nintendo, Nintendo is totally dependent on gaming and R&D because that's all they are. Sony's subsidiaries include everything from film, music, chemicals, schools and finance. Sony is bleeding cash right now, but if Nintendo were in Sony's position, it would be far more dire for them.

I would be fine with more clients, but they have to provide something other just than cheaper games. Competition is good. If they won't even try to compete with Steam, the direction taken by GOG Galaxy sounds like a winner to me, provide an client that complements Steam.
Where will it be in 15 years? Exactly where it is now, at the Cutting Edge of Gaming, a better question would be where are all the "other" networks gonna be?...:-)

Origin has recently rolled out a very aggressive advertising campaign on streaming sites. They are most definately not laying down.

Origin is only doing that as part of their Sims4 campaign. It's really a "Sims4" advertising campaign than anything else.

Origin is dead. EA simply refuses to compete in the space because they've done litereally nothing to make the client a valid competitor to Steam. Origin is 'competing' with Steam from 2002. Not the Steam of today.

They aren't even taking their store seriously. You can't change the language of the Origin store beyond whateever they 'think' you should be using. Don't read French but live in France? You're screwed.
