Most know already, won't matter until they disable backend communications on Valve's side in a year or so, preventing old versions from connecting.

First time getting official word that a version of the client will not work for the older versions. Up to now it's all been speculation.

Well it was in beta for a while now.

they did mention it already in the Beta channel since like early October that the new client won't work on Win7 and 8.1 anymore and those on using the two OSes will remain on the older client.

True, but that was beta. This is production.

cant really blame a company for not supporting an OS thats not even supported by the creators anymore.
Win7 aint getting new updates, like security updates.

not to mention many others, like Chromium that steam uses for their client, do not push updates for win7, so if steam want to keep using the newest version of Chromium, they simply can't keep win7 or 8 supported.

and from steams hardware survey, which i know doesnt have info from all users, show win7 to be 0.23% of the userbase, so even if we're being kind lets say 0.40%

No need to kick someone who is down already.

While I feel their pain with this update it is time for Windows 7 and 8.1 users to either move on or upgrade ... unless someone can find a workaround for it.

You know how some people find a way by hook or by crook.

I mean, it's their security at stakes, not ours. It's still true that we can't blame steam for doing this considering that Windows 7 and 8 are dead. Why is it a surprise?

As I have said before, Valve should not have to support those platforms with a full client moving forward, but they should make a small client to allow those people to keep playing games that they already purchased.

Alternatively, they could have a phone app that functions as the store then pushes the games to the small client.

Too much work. Why even support a dead OS? We have to move forward, not backward. They had MORE than enough time. It's just how things are. It's what's logical.

Valve is not going to make a legacy client, when even MS doesn't support the OS anymore. Time to realize that it's time for an OS update.

Windows 7 was released in 2009 - that's almost two decades ago. Time to move on. Windows 7 was a great OS, and like many, I have fond memories of it, but it's not safe to use it anymore, and it's getting more and more dangerous each day.

If one doesn't want to use newer Windows, switching to Linux is a good alternative, and it's free. Thanks to Valve efforts with Proton, gaming on Linux nowadays is super easy (and it gets even better each month). I recommend Zorin OS or Linux Mint Cinnamon from those coming from Windows, as those distributions have very similar interfaces and keyboard shortcuts.
