Steam decides to remove old family share system at the start of 2025
The new one doesn't work if you don't live in the same house. Are we under new management already? The seas are calling :D:

It works in the same country.

Piracy is not the answer.

One of my brothers lives in TX and the other in Sweden, this system isn't the answer either :crying_yeti:

"I have a slight problem, so PIRACY IT IS", what a great way to get help...

Same house not needed, but same store region. Otherwise people suddenly discover long lost relatives who just HAPPEN to live in cheap countries.

Yes, just as lord gaben said, piracy is a service issue, and here we are after so many years, sad to see

Is there a source for the removal of the old system at the start of 2025?

"I want it, so I take it any way I please" is not a service issue, that's your entitlement.

The old system was made to support that either. It only worked one-way by exploiting IP addresses. Something Valve have never allowed as per their SSA. They turned a blind eye to it until people started abusing it. Now, they enforce the same country limit and further define that a family is a unit of people living in the same house (or at least, the same country).

And your immediate turn to piracy tells me that you're one of those people who abused the old system.

Ah yes somebody with 850 games on his account has to 'abuse' a system just to avoid piracy, ♥♥♥♥♥♥' A, I'm no beggar piss off

The simple fact is that sharing with users in other countries was a exploit that was not intended to be part of Steam Family Share.
To authorize Family Share you had to login into that users PC with your account and activate Family Share.
And i doubt less then 1% actually visited their friends/relatives in another country to do so but gave them their login/password which already was a breach of the Steam TOS.
Then people started to make accounts in countries with cheaper prices and share that account to their main, then they started to sell those accounts on third party sites and so on and so on.

In the end every stricter revision of a older system on Steam comes down to the previous version being abused on a massive scale.

Okay then just block the countries with lower than average buyout for games from linking with accounts outside and you get rid of that problem, no more abuse, or have a better way to authenticate that you know a person, time slots like in the new system where you cannot join a family after 1 year, I think that sounds fair

These comments are sad. Imagine shilling for a multimillion-dollar company that doesn’t care about you.

It's possible to agree with company decisions without shilling.

Shilling is getting paid for it. Agreeing because it makes sense given the circumstances isn't shilling.

I think these are perfectly valid responses, not shills, I just care too much and dont wanna see steam as a whole go down the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ given some ?? decisions in the near past, working with sbi, steam forum moderator outsourcing to trigger happy people, below par launcher rework that hogs ram if left through the day, now this. What's next, removal of games from your library if they leave the store? I can see it :s
