Stardew is heavily inspired by Harvest Moon. It takes pretty heavy inspiration from handheld Harvest Moon games, like Friends of Mineral Town's art style. Mechanically it shares similarities with Harvest Moon's spin off Rune Factory series which were also handheld games. Rune Factory being the first to have combat and more in-depth skills. You can sorta find both on Steam. Friends of Mineral Town being remade with 3D graphics back in 2019, and Rune Factory 5 being on Steam.

The franchise eventually got renamed to Story of Seasons instead of Harvest Moon because the company who translated and ported the games to the West owned the rights to the name and Marvellous couldn't get it back.

After having said all this. Personally, I'd recommend the original Friends of Mineral Town or Harvest Moon DS. They made the 3D remake of Mineral Town too easy. And I like the 2D animated sprite graphics more of the old Harvest Moon games. Though mechanically these old games might frustrate newer gamers.
