Playing on Linux
Hello everyone, I wanted to ask you a question, as a Steam Deck owner in love, I ask you, how is it to play with Linux on a Desktop computer today? Proton is making huge steps forward and there are distributions that are basically compatible with Nvidia drivers. Let's say that it has always been my obsession to leave Windows to be able to use a Linux Distro, but I stopped for some games that perhaps do not work as they should on Linux. Generally I play strategy games, a bit of role-playing games, and the Forza Horizon and Motorsport saga are essential for me.

For this reason I ask you, how is the Gaming situation on Linux today?

All distris are compatible with nvidia drivers.....and it matters more if the vendor offer Linux drivers, not which distri you use.

ok thank you all for your questions, but is there any of you who regularly uses Linux as an operating system to play?

been windows free for years and love it!

i use endeavour for gaming and mint for my daily

my daily is one of my old pc's that linux revived

gaming is pretty easy through steam, although some are having troubles with anticheats

other sources take a little tuning sometimes using programs like bottles or lutris

or even using steam's "add a non steam game" :spaz2excited:

i do not regret it at all

fantastic! :) have you tried Forza Horizon 5 on Linux via Steam? It is said that everything works fine, but after a few hours it starts to slow down and not work properly. Are you aware of all this?

afraid not, partner

not something i own

i can say that i am playing many new games and have no troubles

i have over 700 and so far none that won't run because of linux

have not tried all of them yet, but a lot of new ones and a few heavy hitters

elden ring and cyberpunk 2077 run fine

i do have dirt ralley 2.0 and few other racing games

no problems with them slowing or anything like that

I've been playing games on my Deck for a while now and having great fun. Proton does its job fine as far as I'm concerned, I can play the stuff on my Deck that I want to play on my Deck.

You should not choose on the how games work on the system alone.....but include stuff like how every other Software & Hardware you use will work (or if it will work at all).

I'm only interested in gaming because I know that everything I own will work on Linux. I wanted to be sure about gaming too 😊

it is pretty easy to dual boot and give it a try

make sure to check which nvidia drivers the distro you choose are using

mint is pretty slow on their delivery of new ones

my mint is on the 550 and endeavour is on 565

it's simple, everything that works on Deck will work on linux desktop
i use linux as main OS for long time

Basically, if it works on Deck, then it will work on Desktop. And depending on your hardware, you may get much better performance as well.

after trying somegames with Bazzite linux, I was getting some where between 10-20% less performance compared to Windows, even for games installed from Steam. Also, I noticed the sound quality is not nearly as good as it is for Windows. I use Dolby Atmos for Headphones on Windows and it makes a significant difference, and Dolby Atmos for Headphones isn't available on Linux.

Also some games wouldn't even run in linux at all, which means I need a dual boot system in order to play those games.

Some games it took more tinkering around with various things, including using command line that I had to web search to learn how to do, in order to get the games to work properly.

Overall I see no reason to use Linux for gaming at this time, it is still an overall lessor experience vs Windows for gaming. I won't do a dual boot system, if I have to have Windows installed anyways, I might as well as use Windows for all my games. I am willing to switch to Linux if I can get at least a 1 to 1 equivalent gaming experience in all things between Windows and Linux, and so far Linux gaming is still a long way from being a 1:1 experience compared to Windows.

Strange what you say. In all the tests I've seen online, Linux usually has 4 or 5 more frames than Windows, and has less if you go over 60fps! Maybe you have an AMD graphics card? because I know that AMD graphics drivers are not as functional as their Nvidia counterparts on Linux

It's the other way around, AMD drivers on Linux are better than Nvidia drivers on Linux. I have an Nvidia card.
