Before I setup SteamOS on a new computer, I would like to test it in VMware. Is there a SteamOS ISO available for download?!

Yeah, you're not going to get a good idea of SteamOS from running it in a VM. Plus theres no real reason not to simply use another Linux distribution.

Either way, SSDs are cheap, a $20 240GB drive is more than enough to do testing on.

SteamOS (the current incarnation of it, 3.x) has not been released yet for general PCs; only for the Steam Deck. Unless you're willing and able to do some fairly serious DIY you should wait until it is.

When SteamOS becomes available, just use a live USB stick. No need to use virtual machine.

There is no SteamOS 3.x that has been released for computer use. There is only the Deck image. Feel free to download it and mess around with it, but what you're looking for does not exist yet.

Bazzite is a steam distribution, has been around for ages available to all and github too.

Bazzite is not "a Steam distribution" in a much other sense than it being a Linux distribution that preinstalls Steam, something which you can do on any Linux distribution. Admittedly it's a gaming focused Linux distribution much like Steam OS, but it's not being distributed by Steam/Valve as Steam OS is/will be -- and as a Linux distribution it's in fact somewhat removed from Steam OS, being Fedora-based rather than Arch Linux.

As said half a year ago, Steam OS 3.x, i.e., the Arch Linux based Linux distribution from Valve that powers the Steam Deck, has not been publicly released for general PCs yet, and that's for now still the case.
