Steam command line FPS LIMITER Working.
Hey,

I am testing different method for FPS Capping. Does anyone know how steam limits the FPS with the command [-fps_max <X>] ?

Apparently using in game limiters is the best for input lag. testing this now.

Any info is appreciated.

Steam has no way to limit fps. That's game specific, or engine specific.
fps_max is the Source engine fps limit command iirc.

And about how it does it, it's the same as adding parameters to a desktop shortcut for a non Steam game or program.

If you have NVIDIA, use the control panel for your max FPS. Works well.

What game? Needing an FPS limiter to get rid of input lag is a rather odd proposal. Not exactly common in gaming, that is.

input latency is more affected by image syncing like vertical sync as well as server latency (online play). capping your fps won't have any appreciable effect (if any) on input latency.

If a game's input delay is related to network latency, that's gotta be a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. In terms of it's technical implementation, that is.

well i play alot of Ark so lol.. whenever the server lags or i lag then my inputs are not recognised.. i mean if the connection has a delay then it's only reasonable to expect my inputs to be delayed or just not happen at all server side

Well, that's one ♥♥♥♥♥♥-coded game. Not the only one I've ever seen, I might add. Borderlands 3 hangs ENTIRELY, if there's a network hang. I really expected more from Epic, but after running a dedicaded KF2 server (another Unreal engine game), I am not exactly surprised. There's a lot of bad technical decisions under the hood.

yea the netcode for Ark is not the greatest I will admit. there's a lot of hate for Ark and the way the devs have made it but i get enjoyment out of it. as long as you play on servers that are reasonably close to you then the connection issues aren't totally game breaking. as an Aussie trying to play official servers in either europe or america it's impossible to play due to the latency issues even when ping is reasonable for the distance.

A thing I do with Killing Floor 2 is to simply run my own server. Latency, obviously, becomes a non-issue and having the server set up in a sensible way is a huge bonus.

yea that's the way to do it.. unfortunately for me with ark being my main game at the moment.. the way the devs coded it i can't setup a map cluster on my own network and access it locally. the map cluster will work fine for others outside of my network but not me. sigh. hence why i play on someone else's cluster corrently

If you're on Windows. My preferred way is
MSI Afterburner, which also installs RTSS
With RTSS you can limit them frames.

I believe you can also set limits via nvidia control panel

yea i use RTSS which in my opinion is the better way to do it since it's a CPU side limit. going through Nvidia controls also works on a driver level. not sure which of the 2 is best if any but since i already use RTSS for monitoring purposes, might aswell use it's fps limiting capabilities as well.

So, how does windows do it? I should probably google that.

RTSS has more input lag than in game FPS limiter. According to a video by battlenonsense.
