Infinite Validating/Patching Loop

One of my games is trying to download an update. After Steam finishes validating it starts patching as normal, but then when it hits about 20% it stops patching, it validates again, and when it gets back to patching it drops to 10%, rinse and repeat. I have already tried restarting steam, my computer, and clearing the download cache. Has anyone else run into this or have any ideas?

do you have enough Storage space for the game download, uncompressed, and install of the update?

I have plenty of room so I know that is not the issue

any chance a drive / folder permission for access has been changed?

I do not see how that could have happened. I have not been prompted to do anything like that and I do not go around fiddling with those things on my own

This came up recently on The Long Dark game forums, and these are the instructions the player reporting the issue used to successfully fix it.

The only other thing I can think of to try, if you are not comfortable with deleting logs/files:

Uninstall the game completely. Reinstall the game from scratch. May or may not fix any corrupted files that Steam isn't able to properly validate right now. No guarantee this will work.
