Dead by daylight
Sorry if this is the incorrect section, as I can't post in Dead by Daylight section unless I own the game. I'm new to Steam and this game is on sale, is there anyone who plays it, can you tell me if you recommend it or not? Is this game hard for inexperienced players?

As someone with a lot of hours in the game...no, I cannot earnestly recommend it to a new player. :seriousboss:

Even on sale, I can't say it's worth getting into.

Answering your question first, it's not really "difficult" for Killers, but you might struggle as Survivor. You might be grasping in the dark for a bit until you get a feel for the game. If you're playing Killer, you might find it pretty easy at first because the Survivors are new like you, and don't really know how to play optimally. If you're Survivor, you might find yourself going down quickly because you don't really know how to survive chases.

That being said, it's not terribly excruciating, it just might be kind of tedious if the killer camps you on hook or leaves you on the ground, slowly bleeding out.

I don't recommend it. It has *potential* to be really fun and skill-expressive, but
  1. A majority of the characters (including their perks and killer powers) are locked behind various DLCs. You can buy a character with Iridescent Shards (gained by leveling up), but this is a very very slow process, and if you were to try and get even half of all DLC characters, you'd likely be spending hundreds of hours. This does not account for any perks you buy from the Shrine of Secrets (which also cost iri shards).
  2. The playerbase is just toxic and uniquely annoying. Many multiplayer games are infamous for having a toxic community, but DBD is special because it has a widespread "Us vs. Them" sentiment that no other game has. A lot of Survivor mains and Killer mains will be spiteful towards each other, paint the other side as more toxic than them, complain about the other sides' mains, etc. You could be trying to have a balance discussion, saying this perk should be nerfed or this killer needs buffs, and some random will come out of the woodworks to assume that you're a Survivor main or something and insult you for it.
  3. The gameplay itself can be either really irritating or really boring, depending on which side you're playing. You're playing Killer? Have fun being pallet stunned, teabagged, bodyblocked, blinded (by flashlights), etc. which (imo) are all kind of grating to deal with. Also, it can be stressful to have enough pressure so that Survivors don't make generators fly like crazy. You're playing Survivor? You're going to be sitting on a generator for 90 seconds, occasionally doing skill checks until something happens. Also, if you're against certain killers, you're not going to have any fun (Pinhead). Even with its annoyances, though, Killer is just more fun than Survivor at the moment. Survivor is just kind of boring. The game CAN be fun, I've found myself feeling incredible when I do something cool or I last really long in a chase, but that's inconsistent and kind of rare for me.

I have 1k hours in the game, and to put it simply, it's a timesink game rife with microtransactions. There are people in this game who absolutely love it, and stream it frequently on Twitch or post cool clips online, but those are people who have been playing for a while. When you're a new player, getting into the game might not be worth it.

If you really really want to play the game, absolutely go for it. It could even be your new favorite. Just be aware of how much time and money you might be expected to spend to actually be good or have fun while playing.

Thank you peppermint. And thank you detective ada, for your response, I appreciate you writing something so detailed. For now I'll wait on buying the game. Maybe another time.

The tutorial is about 100 hours, that's all you need to know. Good game but requires a lot of patience, best enjoyed with friends.

3600 hours here.

I dont recommend the game to new people and I could go on for a while but Ill keep it short:

It has a very steep learning curve for new players. People are considered "noobs" to 1,000 hours in most cases. Frankly, even with my time in I am still finding ways to improve, even if only by fractions.

The game uses a F2P model with quite a lot of content locked behind pay walls

The "matchmaking" system is trash. It prioritizes speed over quality in addition to the fact that it appears to not be even close to a true SBMM system, which would be bad enough. If you start playing you will be in the "new player" group and then very shortly after you will be tossed into the general pool with people with thousands of hours.

For a certain type of person the game can be highly addictive.

I seriously do not recommend the game to new players.

The hub moderators are also quick to ban people from the forum. Just something else to mention. I'm permanently banned there and while I admit I earned my first few bans I learned after that, but I ended up getting a perma anyway because I accidentally posted unreleased content in a thread trying to help someone figure out if they were playing with a cheater or not who had equipped items that weren't technically available yet. Even though the thread was deleted anyway and nobody would have been able to see the leaked content, they decided to give me a perma over that.

That was more than a year ago and I've never been banned in any game hub or the generic forums since then, so I wouldn't call myself a troublemaker either. And I'm not the only one who can attest to the hub mods being a little trigger happy.

I can back that up. The moderation is extremely heavy handed. Its the only place Ive ever received a permanent ban on Steam.

I got into it a while back, a couple dozen hours. It's a pretty unique game with its asymmetrical gameplay, and I'd recommend it for that (be aware it's entirely multiplayer-focused, the solo mode isn't worth much). But the often toxic community (you'll probably never see this much teabagging in any other game) and apparent prevalance of hacking are problematic. The game has anticheat, but you'll find plenty of footage of hacks. When the game can be hacked and the hacks can be unnoticeable in a game where a 3% movement speed boost makes all the difference in a chase... that's a problem.

The biggest issue though is the learning curve, especially as Survivor since you have to know what each of the 30+ killers can do. And no, the game doesn't teach you these specifics. It expects you to learn by failing, or watching streamers.

The monetization actually seems pretty decent to me. Half the survivors and killers you can grind for free. The rest you'd have to buy, and some have good perks that you may want. Though I think there's another way you can get these perks using a grindable resource. The characters are reasonably priced on sale. The battle pass seems to be filled entirely with cosmetics, which is absolutely fine by me.

TL;DR?

Short answer: NO, I’d do the polar opposite of recommending it.

Long answer: As a brand new player (have owned the game for less than a week)? I wish I’d never even heard of it. Easily the most toxic in-game and out-of-game (Steam forum & moderators at least) community I’ve ever come across in my 20+ years of gaming. A ton of toxicity from other players and the moderators of the forums are EXTREMELY ban happy. I’d refund it if I could. In my 20+ years on the internet? I’ve been banned from exactly ONE forum (and I’ve participated in too many to count). What forum? The Dead by Daylight Steam forums-for a week. No warning-just BAN. For an “Unsportsmanlike” comment. Nevermind other people throw around “unsportsmanlike” comments ALL the time, but the mods are apparently 100% okay with some. Again, I’ve owned the game for less than a week.

Also, if you’re an achievement hunter? The game is 110% PTW and riddled with microtransactions and FOMO cosmetics that cost real money even if you aren’t.

It’s no fun for new players (especially if you want to play survivor and have no friends to play with) both sides can easily be matched against players who have THOUSANDS of hours in the game on their very first match.

Unfortunately, Steam won’t grant a refund to my miserable self, so I’m stuck with it. All I can do is say: Don’t be like me. Spend your money on a game with a welcoming community instead.

Read my review if you want even more detailed information.

I've played a few hundred hours of it and my recommendation would be a resounding NO DEAR GOD NO...NO....NOOOOOOOOOOO!

The game's "supposed" SBMM is a frustrating experience that literally just doesn't work. Seasons are extremely short, and after you're out of the newbie pool you'll be going up against players who are MILES ahead of you in skill.

If you play killer, expect the survivors to toy with you and taunt you and drag out games just to screw around with you. If you play as survivor, expect to die quickly and early, and expect to be berated by your own team if you don't know what you're doing and play it more like hide and seek rather than looping the killer around while the Benny Hill theme plays.

There's also a massive time sink just to get to a point where you can even be on a level playingfield with other players. Each character has a series of unique perks you can level up and equip through essentially an upgrade web. These are unique to each character.... until you hit level 40 on them and unlock the ability for the perk to start showing up on every other character's web. THEN you have to grind it out on THAT character and be lucky enough for it to show up for the character you actually WANT it on enough times to get it to max level. Now repeat this process for every individual perk from a different character you want access to. With survivors it's not AS bad since they all follow the same mechanics and the only differences are visuals and how loud they are (making it easier to hide or draw attention to yourself depending on your strategy). For killers though... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it's bad... Since they're all mechanically unique you NEED to grind out all the perks you want just to be able to make a viable build, and this might include ones that are on DLC... which brings me to my next point...

There's an in game shop you can use your hard earned in game currency to buy perks you don't have access to so they start appearing on each character's skill tree. These rotate iirc every week from a series of 2 killer perks and 2 survivor perks. At this stage of the game there are upwards of 120 perks in the game... which means you could be waiting for OVER A YEAR to get that one perk you want if you aren't willing to just bite the bullet and buy the DLC.

The only way, and I mean ONLY way I'd recommend this is if you already have a 5 man group looking to play around and do custom games. With custom games you have access to EVERYTHING, so you skip the grind, you have people who (i assume) are actually in it for a fun time and not just there to bully the newbie, and the only things you'd be missing out on are DLC characters. Other than that, avoid it like the plague (and no, i don't mean the character named The Plague that's DLC)....

Oh, also the devs are woefully incompetent at balancing the game and essentially take a fully reactionary approach to design, with new characters basically being designed with aspects to "counter" problem things, survivors being traditionally overpowered at high skill levels and over half the killer roster being literally unplayable after a certain skill bracket, and a fun quote from the lead balance designer that's gone down in history as a meme that he let slip during an update stream: "Freddy's definitely getting a nerf. I don't know why he's getting a nerf, but he's definitely getting a nerf next patch". This was the (at the time) LEAD BALANCE DESIGNER SAYING THIS.

Oh, also if you're looking for an actually scary game, this is not it.

So yea, if all this doesn't scream stay the ♥♥♥♥ away I don't know what will.

If you do have a group who's interested in playing some spooky games together and want that asymetrical experience done in a way that's ACTUALLY scary, look into White Noise 2 or Damned (Damned is horribly optimized though so getting it to actually run might be a bit of a struggle).

Pretty sure it’s level 50 now-at least for survivor characters. And the fact that I have around 20 hours in the game now and am only roughly HALFWAY to enough shards to unlock ONE non-licensed character? ….Really grinds my gears….

Forgive me for new player questions, but (since mods decided to ban me from official forums):

Custom games are a thing? I knew SWF was and won’t be touching survivor again until I find a SWF with comms team (being miserable and learning nothing new because you’re the first to get tunneled and sacrificed/killed in 85% of matches gets old FAST), but this sounds even better-everyone involved gets to have fun. Can you still unlock achievements playing custom games?

110% in agreement about this. I’ve never been scared either side. Jumpscared a handful of times playing survivor, but mostly annoyed. Rarely bewildered but delighted by a “friendly” killer. As killer, momentarily satisfied when I finally down an obnoxious t-bagging player, but at least equally annoyed.

…When you’re matched against freaking PYRAMID HEAD and the second he finds you and catches you you go “whelp, there goes any hope of escaping this match…again…just like 96% of other matches I’ve experienced so far” instead of “OMG, this is SO COOL/SCARY,” there’s obviously a problem.

Oh god so they made the grind even worse since I last played, great. Sadly customs disable achievements but still by far the most enjoyable way to play
