Not unless you consider buying a smart device exclusively for the mobile authenticator.

nope despite it being repeatedly requested for many years they dont actually care about user account security and want to force their bloated store app on everyone instead

I can't see how any 2FA can actually help increase the security of your account. Most people who get "hacked" or otherwise have their account compromised do it on their own by sharing their personal info (including passwords) or managing to get an hold of whatever the name of that packet of info on your computer which is used to identify you, which mean that they can connect to your account without even logging in, in the first place.

In the vast, vast majority of cases 2FA is a waste of time, bandwidth an only serve to add a false sense of security to the user.

There's nothing wrong with MFA. What doesn't help at all though is when galaxy brains give away their account willingly.

Using a smartphone for 2FA does seem sensible in this situation.

And account theft now works like that because 2FA is basically ubiquitous.

Hardware based keyfobs will work for as long they have battery. Once they're out of juice it's either the app or the highway.

You can recover Steam Guard easily if you got the same phone# which you'll get after reporting your old SIM as stolen.

I had to recently as my phone decided to die on me. It's quite straightforward if you have the same SIM.

However nowadays is a pain in the rear how many things you lose and so many hoops you have to go through to get things working if your phone dies on you and have no backup. It's almost like losing an organ.

... not if you keep the phone#. SMS recovery is an option for a huge lot of 2FA out there. Including Steam, including email. I've moved my Steam & Microsoft 2FA to a new phone this way just recently.
