if piracy is a service problem, then steam has a service problem
this is about forced updates !
i agree with you steam, piracy is part service problem.

let me tell you about your service with the example of GTA4. (there are plenty more)

this stupid game gets non stop updates because of that stupid R* launcher, which, i'm pretty sure, was added post purchase btw and i'm 100% sure it was with GTA5. R* would sue you if you would breach a purchasing contract.

read only on the acf file does not work. the only really working solution to me looks like, get the game you want to play ready. zip and backup the folder and when an update gets released, update, delete folder, unzip backup.
with a game like GTA4 getting non stop updates, it will take time and wear out SSDs...

so steam explain to me why i should not pirate any future games? i'm curious.

That wasn't the reason for Napster. Napster was simply a file sharing platform. But, since they refused to prevent people sharing songs, they got dragged through court.

It didn't start because music became bad.

Well, how are people getting these games for PCX2? I have the discs, but generally people are getting those games from other methods.

Anyhow, idk if we should talking about this, but it's gonna happen for gaming.
Other methods.

If you think piracy(which is what got Napster got in trouble for) is "gonna happen for gaming", you're about 50 years too late.

Funny enough, Steam actually greatly reduces piracy since the service offered games in places that they weren't obtainable through legal means before.

It probably isn't best to speak about the history of things you aren't familiar with.

I've purchased 'used" PS2 DVDs. Some people still have them and they are openly sold online.

Well, sincerely, this an issue i'm not gonna get into, being i have no clue, but do know, it's already happening, as you already know apparently. And so, whatever.

It's been happening. It's currently happening. It will always be happening.

If your aren't familiar about the subject, it's best to not attempt to speak with authority on it.

Did i speak "authority" on it? I may not know piracy issues, but i know reading comprehension. Best to stay away from that subject, Mr Mango.

didn't expect valve here, but if you're a normal user that sees themselves as customer, why would you support anti customer practices that hard? makes only sense if you're a business customer that takes part in anti customer practices.

oh well...

i get wanting to keep a version of the game that you like

even supported it myself before

then i learned that they already can, and that it is up to the company

i am all for that

what you are asking is for the store to enforce this on the devs/pubs

people that have paid to have their games put here

why would they do that?

how many versions am "i" supposed to keep?

how much support am i supposed to give to each?

at what point am i allowed to say

"i am done with this version for the 6 of you"

why wouldn't i just make the game and be done

then make a part 2 and 3 and so on like the cartridge days?

anyways

ask the devs to keep the version available

it may not be all that difficult

as for mods

it is what we get for modding

they break

hopefully the modder is still working on them after

or someone picks it up

but we get what we chose to get

You did by stating a there would be a Napster style 'service' for video games after incorrectly explaining why Napster was created.

i cant tell if you are a serious person or you just dont get it. most of the modders are pretty much done with companies like bethsanda because of these updates and breaking of mods and if we have all the files to mod the game on our end without using places like nexus mods the entire thing is jail broken and modded to the point it might as well be a diffrent game.

youve only further proved my point by* wasting time with this. also its not rockstar do*ing the update it might be but like with tww1 2 and 3 the update comes through steam. youll see it in the bottom center of steam where it says mange downloads when there is an update.

if you arent seeing something so basic idk anymore. i cant take you seriously though.

when there is a download and steams open but rockstar isnt open. and in the task manger steam is open and rockstars lancher isnt open. steams doing the update. the rockstar bs isnt open. rock star might be pinging the update but steam is distributing it.

Yet most people that mod popular games seem to have zero issues updating their mods when the game updates for the people that play their mods. It's just that the people using the mods feel overly entitled to not have any updates from a game, even when large amounts of bugs finally get dealt with which said update apparently broke almost no mods if any mods, let's face it, mod users do tend to lie or exaggerate quite a lot as well in the name of "I don't want it to update"

Not at all, you've actually demonstrated in your own post information that goes against your own post.
Sole party in charge of it is the one that allows or disallows it for; Rockstar Games in this scenario.

The self-defeating line of "the update comes through steam" displays they did not make thus do not control the updates, but for the Steam Client, the Developer/Publisher has the Option to enable or disable Branches.

That also acknowledges that Valve is not the responsible party that makes the updates, they merely pass it through from the party that does.

You literally acknowledged in your post that the updates only come THROUGH Steam, so failing to acknowledge basic stuff seems lost on most beginner mod users, especially since most lack the most basic thing; patience, to wait for a mod to merely be updated.

Most long term mod creators or users tend to know how this stuff works, how to fix things themselves, or otherwise to have patience.

you talking about the beta feature to keep old versions, for example, this works well for paradox games.
and may not be needed for other games. steam had this feature before, just to ignore the update.

and this is no issue for online games, they check for version miss match anyways.

It would still require the update.

I actually remember this, if you hit "launch now" it would just download the update then automatically launch the game. Just telling it to download the update would only download the update.

If SP, likely wont affect much though Fallout 4 as example did have A LOT of bug fixes, and people complained it temporarily broke mods rather than being happy it fixed so many long term bugs. Such types are never happy about the positives, it's always about updating itself or mods temporarily being broken because Devs change dependent code rather than do what old RTS Devs did.

you understand that some people spend more time modding their bethesda game than playing it? and if an update ruins that all, don't you think they have reason to be mad?

They're nothing more than a distributor. Ever gone to a grocery store and seen the guy stocking the shelves with certain brand products? Think of it like that, or merely the store itself; they don't make the product, they just sell the license to it.

Don't over-estimate a platforms power to do anything on behalf of those that actually own all the rights and decision power to products Valve doesn't make.

Rockstar Game; Rockstar Request. Go contact Rockstar Games, Valve is not Rockstar Games.

if a grocery store sells rotten fruit, to whom do you complain about? the fruit company or the store? don't answer i don't think it's a good comparison.

my point stands on gabe's quote "piracy is a service problem" and this service brings quite a lot of problems for people that play modded games, modded games that require an older version of the game, or just people that don't like an update. and like i said i don't care whos to blame, the service i'm using is steam.

if you're not affected by that, good for you.

you clearly don't understand gaming. If a game updates it is more likely to break mods. imagine that. this is not something secret. any modder knows this. anyone who plays with mods knows this. take warhammer 3 for example they just released an update that broke some mods and modders had to patch it. lol. you blamed Steam for a Rockstar issue. blame them.

I really wish all these people complaining would get together and make their own game store.

Maybe they would learn first hand how easy it is to run a store like this.

You pirating games - one of the biggest problems in gaming, period.
AustrAlien2010 27. aug. 2024 kl. 17:30
But the R* launcher is especially intrusive, because it requires them to connect to the internet every two weeks or so.
Them being upset is very understandable. Suddenly they have to pay for an internet connection, whereas earlier they could just play it without internet.
