steam overlay and steam stream question.
Does disabling steam overlay make it so my friends cant watch my game threw steam stream?

Correct. If want to use Steam in-game streaming feature, you need Steam overlay enable,.it same for taking screenshots, or in-game chat message to friends, and group, or etc that overlay provides.

You can turn of broadcasting in the settings and also make it "friends must request to watch."

If this is about not wanting someone to make request, or to automatically start up stream, there an option in the settings of steam where can have it off without having to turn off steam overlay.

Steam > settings > broadcasting > privacy setting > broadcasting disable.

If want it to be request instead set it to friend can request to watch my games.

Or if want it on anytime, friends can watch my game, or anyone can watch my games.

If want to hide from friends, or people showing you're online, open friendlist, and can either go invisible so can still have access to chats, or offline to not have access to chats, and don't get any notifications.
