And stating what year we're in has never been an argument in the first place
Of course, text becomes much bigger too..
It would be nice to be able to customize text size in the forums (such as Normal, Bigger, Biggest, Smaller, Smallest) but I guess this is very low priority for Valve, so unlikely to happen soon.
As for displaying the pics bigger on the forums, UI clutter is an issue to keep in check. There is atleast the hover-over option to get a better idea as of what another user's avatar pic is, but that is still scaled down a notch. I'd advocate for a full-sized preview, like on the profile page, but I've recently seen what happens when Steam's client loads up too many assets at once (it laaags).
An issue stems from computers supporting higher resolutions whilst monitors in general not getting much bigger. I can personally attest to how not everyone is able to fully utilize the far-improved DPI, let alone make it out from a jumbled mess. I, myself, just use some flatscreen television to make things easier on my shoddy eyesight.
You have between 24", 27', 28" to choose now, as well as 32", 38", 39", and even 105" monitors. :)
You can choose between standard screen, taller screen (different aspect ratio from the standard 16:9), wide-screen, ultra-widescreen too.
Of course, the 105" monitor offered by iiyama (not a TV!) is really expensive and won't fit on some (many?) desks/work tables around. :)
Edit: and don't get me started on the 'telling a computer to display another computer' nonsense that is with smart TVs.
Bigger? No really needed
I still think SPUF did it best. Avatars only for mods, Valve staff and developers
would be better if could use animated gifs to spice up the forums, its getting boring seeing the same old faces time and time again.
*So 8MB not terribly small after all. My latest avatar pic was only ~0.1MB (rounded up), before nuking it with the file type conversion and the shrinkage.
