Steam on Xbox
The internet is buzzing over Phil Spencer’s latest comments to Polygon with many speculating that he’s alluding to the idea of opening up the Xbox consoles to allow other storefronts like Steam to work on the currently closed platform.

I think this would be great. We see developers targeting Steam Deck and the benefits of developing for a fixed platform, the same benefits would obviously apply to Xbox.
But how would Microsoft monetise this?

Personally, I’m clambering for a Steam console and this would be the next best thing.

Thoughts?

Well, Xbox just spent 70 billion, to purchase one publisher. That's worth more than Sony and Valve combined, and that's just one acquisition.

Sony is worth over $100 Billion alone.

However, nobody beat PS2. And that's speaks volumes as well.

Really? Once again you need better sources
https://www.gamesradar.com/ps5-on-track-to-overtake-the-ps2-and-become-sonys-most-successful-console-yet/

That didn't stop the PS5 from becoming Sony's fastest-selling console ever back in 2021, crossing 10 million units sold in under nine months.

It easily overtook the PS2 sales in the same timeframe while having a global supply shortage due to the pandemic.

Yeah in Europe and Japan its beyond abysmal for xbox where as Sony and Nintendo both thrive over there.

Yep. Nintendo is king here. They have 70% of the "new release" store shelf space for Switch alone. PlayStation have the other 30 split among PS5 and PS4. And it's a similar split for second hand, just with Wii/U, (3)DS, PS3, PS2, PS Vita, and PSP included. Sony have more systems, but still less shelf space in the majority of stores. Xbox gets around half a shelf combined for the few Original, 360, and 1/S/X titles that stores are willing to buy from customers.

I suppose if Gate's hadn't messed up, things would only differ in that Sony would share more space with Xbox. Nintendo would still have most of the room just for themselves.

Makes sense since consoles are a money sink. If you don't have the right ecosystem for them, and the games, then they fall and take you with them.

Why Microsoft started the whole "Xbox on PC" thing years ago with Windows 10, and did well with it along with their GamePass.

But PC games on Xbox? Ehh... I severely doubt it being something a console focused gamer could really afford, and here's why.

You'll either get a crappy streaming box, which we all know will fail as every other attempt. Or you'll get a crappy mini PC that can't play current releases well.

Personally, streaming is such a bad option unless for the very poor in finances available to them. Even then it requires a good connection, and being close to the servers due to input latency etc. Even Google Stadia had some of the worst latency using it, and even GeForce Now with a Gigabit connection and being near the server, the latency to just not enjoyable for me.

Streaming works great. I've used both services, GFN and GP Ultimate. These are not venues someone of your PC literacy and demands are going to meet. But you are not the average casual gamer.

We need all of you to use your tech minds, know how, and make suggestion on how to make this partnership HAPPEN :steamhappy:

I mean heck - https://www.tweaktown.com/news/96558/big-3-revenues-compared-playstation-made-30-billion-in-2023-xbox-18/index.html

Playstation made about as much revenue as Nintendo and Xbox COMBINED last year. Their revenue is up over 20% from 2022.

A lot of xboxs revenue is coming from gamepass as well and not the console which is why they have the issues they have.

Well, Xbox just spent 70 billion, to purchase one publisher. That's worth more than Sony and Valve combined, and that's just one acquisition.

They can only wish they had MS resources. Anyhow, i digress.

Again that isn't even accurate. Please actually research your sources before posting. Sony is worth over a hundred billion, and net worth of a company doesn't matter when you are talking about sales.

I mean how many new releases are you buying on HD-DVD discs, or how many songs do you listen to on your Zune? Having more capital doesn't stop your product from failing and disappearing when its not as good as your competitors.

This has got me thinking. Can I get Linux running on an Xbox? I’ve got quite a few 360s and One’s laying around but I assume they’re riddled with hardware and software securities to make it more trouble than it’s worth.

My god. It's happening. My gaming DREAM is coming about. A Spencer Newell partnership.

This is AWESOME.

Phil Spencer never mentioned Steam nor Gabe Newell in the article linked.

True, I love my low latency, and rapid response. I click or push a button, better be near instant response, not a slight delay that drives me nuts.

And the only way such a streaming service could truly work, is if they expanded their Azure server base(Which is already massive, making Amazon and Google look pathetic). But the cost to run such a facility, would be a bigger money sink than consoles are.

To put it into perspective, the one I worked at before my promotion at a smaller company, the average electricity bill alone was a quarter million dollars a month. That's not including the cost of hardware, personal for support and tech support, etc etc.

How does one make an affordable streaming service with those costs? Even GeForce Now can't, they just offer idle clusters as a gaming option when not used for work needs.

No it isn't. Phil mentioned he'd wish he could OWN steam, then again who doesn't wish they could own a company making billions.

I mean I talked about how i wished i owned amazon years ago, that doesn't mean I have plans to buy it...

I don't use any of those. I just have PS4 and Xbox One, and Xbox just gives me more value for my money. Including, access to Steam thru Edge on GFN.

Anyhow, cast me aside. I'm just a man, a casual gamer, who wants my games. Lets make it happen.

Yes, the only issue there, is you only have the games they provide thru Steam (Epic, Game Pass, etc). You don't have access to your whole library. If we did, i likely would not even be on this forum, at all.
