End of life for Win 10 Oct 2025. How long will Steam support it?

I'm not the one on the video lol, but apparently Oct 2025 is end of life for Win 10. And seems to be a "hard" date. How long will Steam support it beyond that date?

In the interim, looking at the comments on the video, people still seem to be running Win 7, and are happy with it.

same version as everyone else using steam, its not OS dependent, the only difference is beta gets more version changes.

that being said, beta version is... (as of april 26th)

in any case, the stable and beta client still use cef 109 (cef itself is on version 123 and valve takes years to move through versions), which is still fully compatible with win 7, not to mention they are still updating/making changes to the win 7 files in the cef folder, despite win 7 losing support.

doubt they move from cef 109 for at least a year or 2, or could be longer, who knows.

The next version of CEF will not support Windows 7, this is the key thing that all of these Windows 7 users keep forgetting or choose to forget.

To make this as clear as possible, the current version of CEF is the last version that supports Windows 7.

A sincere question i'd ask (sincere, being i sincerely don't know, being it's never been answered), is exactly "when" did XP stop performing on Steam?

"Performing" meaning, stop playing the games?

This thread was created, not at all for me, but for others sake, being i'm still on Win 7, and the games still going, no matter the announcement, and we're now getting into May.

And so when people say, 10 years for Win 10, after the EOL date next Oct, i can only ssume that's because Steam doesn't really end games until years after their end date.

If the game rely on live service, and DRM to run that be your answer to stop playing the said game. Can look up Ubisoft The crew for my point, most games don't follow Ubisoft, but games still tied to clients which that your main problem have to realize, and I did explain this to you since last year, if don't want to change OS in the future, avoid live services + DRM there gog, and other stores that doesn't require client to download the games, or needing to be online at all for the games, draw back you just lack the games that not offer there, but goal is to have exactly how you wanted to never change OS.

Yes I pointed out last year as well Windows xp users went out of their way to make workaround for Steam forcing old version of the client, Xp can't use version W7 supports, and can see that if and when Steam drop next support, there be same thing all over again in due time, Xp didn't stop working same day support dropped, things did break many months later after support dropped, where XP users were facing download errors, and crashing of client that can be bugging out, the other problem is method to doing it using file sharing which is unsafe since trusting others to download their files that they could temper with .exe file that need to run giving it permission. Now whenever Steam does it again for W7 is anyone guess, since it's whenever they plan to drop the final bomb that start coming up with actual workaround to see what works once bomb hit, which I also pointed out last year.

This is pretty much the best advice I know of for retro gaming down the road; Steam isn't good for that, IMO, and it hasn't show as well as it can yet (just wait till Steam only works on a Windows that has extreme trouble running stuff that was made for 7).

Windows 11 required a lot of people to buy new computers or never run it, so Windows 12 requiring you to wear a big hat seems less draconian

you dont need to buy new computer tho, nothing stopping you from running win11 on an "unsupported" pc via rufus

TBH Linux best option with Steam not only can be good for retro, but because on linux you can make full top to bottom changes without destorying whole OS, or having permission issues, not just that but how wine really made game change, along with proton, and community with opengl & vulkan layer support, which not only allow user to have modem OS with features, and retro support, but can go on for years unlike Windows that always updates it policy, and changes where have to rely on community to bring that backwards support for retro, and layer translation. Even on Mac there people that goes out of their way to get windows apps to work on Mac even on new mac OS & hardware which is called whiskey.

But yes if said person wish to stick to one OS for life, or simply doing it for "perfect nostalgia" then yes sticking to DRM free only is the ONLY way to go in this path, otherwise there nothing wrong to using modem OS's really.

No it's not. Windows 11 has been a massive flop and Microsoft won't discontinue support for 10 until a majority of people move away from it.
