Valve, "Steam client WebHelper" high CPU usage, high RAM usage in IDLE.
I have no idea what is going on with this process, but only now I noticed that it consumed 2 GB of RAM (no RAM usage limit, or self-cleaning?) and was constantly using the CPU.

No animated effects are running. Hardware acceleration on and off (no difference). All Steam windows are closed (just hanging in the tray.). Not in the game.

Opening Profile page, or Activity, then closing the main window, Friends panel and 1 chat with a friend, all this already takes up 700+ MB, keeping it in memory and constantly keeps rising like in a loop.

I still have the Chrome browser open at the same time with 22 subprocesses, but even it does not use the CPU when idle.
I look at the Task Manager to see "web helper" uses 3-8% (up to 25% in short peaks!) of my CPU when idle on the desktop.

@Valve, what the hell is going on with the version of chromium browser you're using? Could you fix this in next update, please?:boomer:

P.S: I don’t need advice from the community on how to launch Steam with keys without a browser and other nonsense.

hello

Just keep in mind that if you see this kind of thing https://postimg.cc/XXCT2VSG
for the file achievement_progress.json from folder \steam\userdata\<youtusernumber>\config\librarycache even if the file is small, then delete the file while steam is not running.
thanks

The current Steam Client is a Win7 build, despite Microsoft having killed Win7 support. This means you're going to experience many system-related issues that commonly occur in deprecated DOMs.

I've already submitted a ticket to Steam Support, they responded with "We've forwarded this matter to the appropriate department." So it's a known CVE but there's no news on how long it'll take for Valve to release a functional Win10 DOM.

P.S: I don’t need advice from the community on how to launch Steam with keys without a browser and other nonsense.

Gonna agree with you on this one, OP, this isn't something users have any control over.

At least we know they know.

A rough list of things that (seem to) solve my problem include:

(snip)

Some actions may not affect on the fix of this problem. But in general, I went about this way, unless I'm missing something.:lunar2019piginablanket:
Do note especially with weaker CPUs, you should use a non-animated avatar (same for avatar frames) and disable those settings for the client, also in the Settings section under "friends & chat". Overall it's a good save on needless cpu use, you can thank chromium (google) for that kind of performance hit.

Happy it isn't just me. I swapped to the beta branch in the hopes that it'll resolve itself. Had absolutely zero issues with it until yesterday at the earliest. Suddenly have my games slamming down to single digit fps when it spikes and eats a ton of my resources.

i think at this point if steam is not going to fix this then might as well let us go back to the ui before the update, i don't want drm eating up precious resources needed for running actual games.

Wow, I actually thought it's just me, when I only in the last, I'd say 2 days, noticed massive CPU spikes across all cpu cores,. Happening BOTH in game and even when no game is running, and Im just doing work on my desktop.

Looking into task manager showed me, the moronic steam client webhelper, who is developed by a bunch of losers, spikes to 100% cpu usage for a second, every now and then.

Being in game this actually causes a short but massive drop in FPS.

Steam is bloatware at this point.

Steam Families Beta, after closing any game then closing Steam to task tray (lower right corner) then checking task manager, Steam Client Webhelper can be seen helping itself to +/- ~5% cpu usage alternating between multiple "Webhelper" processes.

This behavior appears when using these steps :

1) Steam is launched at Library, Window is maximized, wait for it to settle down to 0% cpu in idle.

2) Launch any single player game. Close the game. Back to Steam library window.

3) Press X to Close Steam to task tray (Not minimize to taskbar)

4) Watch Steam Client Webhelper cpu usage, it keeps going as long as Steam is running.

5) Maximize Steam window does not change this behavior

On a Laptop which depends on battery power, this is an issue of wasting cpu cycles.

Steam is running in a most minimal configuration possible (low performance, low bandwidth, no friends chat login, Start at Library (library size < 12 games)

Very curious to know what exactly is Steam Client Webhelper doing?
